Show Page A12 Thursday, March 19, 1987 Park Record WflnaM9ya I&imnw? by Rick Brough mn .to MM i t MJm '. m " g a.'..a.aJev JHMHH Safety by the numbers The man was unshaven. He looked like he hadn't shaved shav-ed for two days. But his eyes were lit up with the gleam of discovery. "I've got it," he said, rushing up to my desk. "I know how to prevent thousands of accidents and deaths every year." Unfortunately, as he said this, he accidentally stapled his thumb. Aflei digging out the staple and bandaging his thumb, I asked him, "So what is this discovery of yours?" "I can prove that if the American public follows a few simple safety measures, their safety will be improved 1,000 percent"! ' "How did you discover this? " "That's the beauty of it! I found the answer by looking at the statistics!" "For instance, what's one of the most common statistics? The one that says most accidents happen at home you know slipping in the shower, burning yourself with bacon grease, falling off ladders, that sort of thing." "Yeah. So." "Well, the answer is obvious. Don't do those things in your own home!" "What sense is that? How am I supposed to cook my meals or take a shower, or ." "Simple," he told me. "You do that in someone else's home! By law, all the residences in the United States will pair off. You do all the cooking, cleaning and all that dangerous stuff for your neighbor's house, and he'll do the same in your home." 'Exactly what am I allowed to do in my own home?" I said. "I would say reading the TV Guide and sorting socks!" "Fascinating," I said. "Are there any more applications applica-tions for your theory?" "Oh, sure," he said, drawing papers out of a hip briefcase. brief-case. As he pulled out a brochure, one of the sheets gave him a paper cut. Bad luck! Right on a major vein in his palm! "You're aware of the statistic that says most murders occur between friends or family members," he noted, grabbing a tournaquet to stanch the blood. "So don't live with your family! Set up housekeeping with complete strangers." "Seems to make sense." "Sure it does," he added. "Then if you shoot somebody because he piled his undershorts in the bathroom once too often, you are at least acting with some objectivity! " The man pulled out his meager lunch, a bag of potato chips. Unfortunately, someone at the factory left a thumbtack in the chips. No, he didn't swallow it, he just opened up the wound on his thumb again. "Here's another good idea" he said. "It's well known that more people died in auto acidents than in air accidents. ac-cidents. So why have people traveled in autos? Let everyone buy a private helicopter." "Say you need to go the 7-Eleven for a quart of milk. Start up your helicopter, open the door in the roof of your garage, take off, and hop three blocks over to the convenience conve-nience store. "What about the copter blades?" I asked. "7-Eleven shouldn't hire tall clerks." "What if it's a cold morning and your copter sits out on the driveway?" "Have someone warm it up for you," he said, "But make sure it's a stranger." "And another thing. It has been proven that more people peo-ple have been mauled by sharks and grizzly bears, than have been murdered by serial killers. Yet the animals, who are the more serious problem, are generally allowed allow-ed to roam free. "What's the solution? Find these animals and lock 'em up. In the meantime, we can release people such as Charles Manson and Ted Bundy, and confine them to Yellowstone National Park." "Will that be safe?" "As long as the kids remember not to feed them hot dogs!" He was about to continue, but just then, a small meteorite shattered my window and struck him in the head. He was barely conscious when the ambulance came. As they loaded him on a stretcher, I said, "Geez, I'm sorry. The odds against your getting hit by that rock must be astronomical. What amazing bad luck! " "Que sera, sera!" by Teri Gomes Beatles,Beach Boys & Bruce Saturday night when the strains of the Beatles filtered through our living room with great clarity over the compact com-pact disc player, my daughter said the most surprising (to me) thing. "Who did this song first? The Beatles or Music Man? The song was Till There Was You. First, I was pleased Jenny remembered the song had been in Music Man, a show she had one line in years ago at the Egyptian Theatre. I'm certain when I was just her age and The Beatles first recorded that hit I thought it was theirs alone. Second, I was glad she cared in some musical history sense who should get the credit for first penning the song. And all that aside, it just reinforced to me how important, impor-tant, for vastly different reasons, music is in our family. Growing up in the late Fifties and Sixties the music I remember my own mother playing on the record player (no stereo for that single working mother) was a lot of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and who ever sang Fascination. I used to listen to the music I hoped to own by walking downtown to the record store and asking to have them put on the song while I sat in the little listening listen-ing booth with the earphones on. Sometimes I'd go with my girlfriend, Judy, but often I would just wander in alone. My grandparents gave me a transistor radio somewhere during those formative years and I, like my friends, listened to my favorite station while doing housework, homework and just hanging out. Those junior high years brought me the entire English invasion from Gerry and the Pacemakers to the Dave Clark Five. And I got in on The Beatles, The Beach Boys and The Monkees, the first time around. When I was married, young, we chose our friend with the wonderful operatic voice to sing If Ever Would Leave You from Cameotatthe wedding and A Time For Us from the then recent movie hit, Romeo and Juliet. Although there was a stereo always in our home our musical library became a reflection of our growing differences. dif-ferences. He liked John Denver, I chose Liza Minnelli. I liked Neil Diamond and he favored Glen Campbell. The same week I bought Hotel California by the Eagles and the cast album from Fiddler on the Roof he knew he had lost me. He was gone by the end of the week. During my newly single period I sampled music like a box of chocolates. I tried Barry Manilow for a while until I ran into a male buddy of mine at a record store who saw me fingering Barry's latest. "Now that you're single you don't really buy that dishwater-housewife-inusic do you?" I hung my head. He picked out a Janis Ian album for me and the sound track from the new Broadway musical, A Chorus Line. As a happy divorce present from my good friend Denise, I was introduced to Dan Fogelberg, in album-form album-form I mean. She followed with Jesse Collin Young, Billy Joel and Tim Weisberg. I'm not certain who first introduced in-troduced me to Peter Alien, I think maybe Tommy, but it was in that same musically transitional period. When I moved to Park City it was eight years ago this month. I took my son out to dinner for his birthday and this nice man with a beard was playing the guitar and when my son requested Puff, The Magic Dragon he didn't roll his eyes or anything like that. He smiled, played that song and then followed it up with House at Pooh Corner. It took us a few months to formally meet and start dating but a little over a year later we were married. Tom Distad sang the Dan Fogelberg song, Longer and when the ceremony ended with a kiss, my husband took my bouquet, threw it out into the crowd outside at the Kimball Art Center and that signaled the Dixieland Band at the top of the stairs to start playing Twelfth Street Rag. The band led the guests on a parade up Main Street to the Claimjumper restaurant where we celebrated with more of their lively tunes. Our years have been filled since then with musical theatre productions both children played parts in, lessons on clarinets and pianos and dualing stereos in our teenagers' rooms. But always, there is music in the house. Some of the music we really share I think Randy got the Bruce Springstein album as much for himself as it was my birthday present. Jenny loves the Beach Boys and Randy bought the Stand By Me tape after he saw the movie. We are not entirely musically compatible we are real people, and Don has his Mozart music he can be assured no one else will touch. My Barbara Streisand is always where I last left it, nobody plays Jenny's Madonna but her, and Randy's Howard Jones is enjoyed by sister, but that's it. On Sunday we saw the latest teen flick, Some Kind of Wonderful and Randy remarked that the Corey Hart song he liked was part of the sound track. I asked which .one and he hummed something about ... "fools rush in". ..and it struck a vein with me he meant Can't Help Falling In Love, a song I remember my older sister playing play-ing by that guy my Mom called, Elvis the Pelvis. My husband and I exchanged knowing looks and then we put another Beatles disc on and Jenny said in amazement, amaze-ment, "You mean they did Twist and Shout first ?" So much music history yet to learn... We all started laughing then broke out into a frenzied lip sync in the living room. Musically, it's really the only way the kids and I should ever perform. in the Travel Section Ad Deadline March 27 $79,900 .:.'! - -'C.ilf $86,000 $95,000 OLD TOWN 312 Norfolk, 3 bd, 2.5 ba, ski-to, ski-from, views of town, spacious unit with family room.
