Show Park Record Thursday, January 22, 1987 Page C3 Find out what to do before heading out by NILS ABRAMSON Red Pine Backcountry Rescue You and your party are on a pleasant plea-sant tour in the backcountry, suddenly sud-denly a person in your group is caught and buried by an avalanche. What do you do? The buried victims' chance for survival depends on how prepared and how effectively the other members of the party carry out the rescue. Self-rescue means being responsible for you and your group. You should have enough safety equipment and be trained in its use. The group while touring should follow safe touring techniques. Understanding and using an avalanche avalan-che forecast combined with field observations during your tour will keep you current with the present snow stability. While crossing a hazardous slope only one member of the group should go at one time. If the whole group Ski Team starts building positive platform by JENNIFER MADGIC Record staff writer The Park City Ski Team just finished a weekend of confidence building after returning home from giant slalom and slalom competition in Powder Mountain and Solitude. With team members all placing well in their respective levels, Fred Turton, head coach for the team, said he was very pleased with his teams' results and hopes the high results will build a platform for the remainder of the season. Finishing competition in the Utah Winter Games, the Park City Ski Team sent a total of 15 competitors to Snowbird to race in Intermoun-tain Intermoun-tain Cup slalom competition. On Jan. 17, Jeff Campbell of Park City led his team with a fifth-place finish after two runs. Campbell, finishing in 1:39.01, was second after his first run and slipped to fifth after an aggressive second run. Teammates Jere Calmes and Jacob Doilney lined up behind Campbell in 10th and 12th respectively, respec-tively, finishing in 1:39.77 and 1:39.98. Other Park City men to finish were Erik Johnson, 26th; Jeff Jones, 42nd; Chris Nelson, 67th; Todd Feiwell, 72nd; and Jeff Jenson, 86th. The lineup changed slightly in competition on Sunday with Doilney taking the leading Park City position with 11th. Calmes followed in 12th and Campbell tied for 13th. Park City Town Races to start next week The 1986-87 Park City Town Race Series sponsored by Michelob Light is set to start Monday, Jan. 26, with the first of six dual giant slalom events of the season. Awards are given to the top three individual men and women in each class, in each race. Points are accumulated for overall series titles in each class. The Town Race Series will cost entrants $7 per race or $150 per team or $30 per person for the entire season. For more information call Park City Ski Area 649-8111. Handicapped clinic set for Jan. 22 through 25 The National Handicapped Sports and Recreation Association and the Park City Handicapped Sports will be conducting a handicapped "learn-to-ski" clinic at the Park City Ski Area on Jan. 22 through 25. For more information on clinics for those wishing to teach handicapped individuals or if you're handicapped han-dicapped and wish to participate call Meeche White at 649-3991 or 649-8111 (Park City Ski School). If you are caught it is important to remain calm. Swimming motions can help to move through moving snow. If possible, it is advisable to move towards the sides of an avalanche avalan-che where the snow is moving slower. While being buried isn't the most pleasant experience, your safety can depend on your ability to remain calm and follow a few procedures that can possibly save your life. For instance, it is important to try to form a breathing space in front of your face with your hands. Save oxygen ox-ygen while buried, relax and try not to struggle or scream. If all goes right, hopefully one of your friends saw where you went down and is on their way to helping Jeff Jones ot iarK city moved up to 29th position in the second day of action, with teammate Johnson in 43rd; Todd Feiwell, 61st; Chris Nelson, 74th; Keir Vermilyea, 77th and Jeff Jenson, who incidentally started dead last in 120th position, finishing 83rd. The women spread the Park City Ski name across the finish roster with Cammy Potter finishing third on Jan. 17. Potter was followed by Hilary Felton, 15th; Bristol Soren-son, Soren-son, 18th; Heather Circo, 19th and Ali Solomon, 21st. Potter continued leading the pack with a 15th on Sunday after the addition addi-tion of the University of Utah women's ski team. Essie Doilney followed in 18th, Amy Day, 20th; Hilary Felton, 26th; Heather Circo, 29th; Bristol Sorenson, 30th and Ali Solomon, 33rd. "It was just a real exciting weekend for everyone," said assistant assis-tant coach Jim Clifford. "There was just an optimism that was growing. It's hard to single out one person for a great effort because guys and girls did extremely well, even Jeff Jenson. Jen-son. He started at the bottom of the list and was able to move up all the way to 83rd. "Sometimes in ski racing winning isn't necessarily the first on the charts. Everyone of those kids had a great weekend. Based on the level of competition this is by far the best these kids have ever skied. We're on See me for car, home, life and health insurance. Home OHices Bloommgton, Illinois you out. Before attempting a rescue, it is important for the group to check the avalanche path for more danger. If it looks like it's going to slide again, be sure to take necessary precautions. precau-tions. The point at which the victim was last seen should be marked as well as the point which the victim was initially in-itially taken down from. Someone should quickly make a search of the deposition area of the avalanche. If the victim is wearing a beeper the rescue leader should have the other group members turn theirs off and have one person perform per-form a proper search. Next step is examining the probe line. Probers line up fingertip to fingertip with arms extended. Begin probing once to the left of each per a roll. It's really exciting," said Clifford. Clif-ford. Powder Mountain proved to be as profitable for the Park City Ski Team as 30 kids travelled to resort for giant slalom competition over the weekend. Rachel Solomon, Carrie Miller, Angela Coulter and Jessica Thompson Thomp-son finished first through fourth in J-III J-III (12-13) action on Saturday. Carrie moved to first place on Sun-day, Sun-day, leaving her teammates finishing in the same order as the previous day. Ashley Rothwell was the only Park City member present in girl's J-V (9 and under) racing. Rothwell managed a second on both days of competition. In J-IV (10-11) girls Cristin Circo and Teveka Sorensen of Park City finished second and third on both days. Sandi Ferre finished with a 6th on Saturday and a 4th on Sunday, while teammates Brooke Coleman finished finish-ed 5th and 6th and Kayleen Baity 7th and 5th. In boy's J-II competition Carter Gregory led the Park City pack with two 2nd places. Christian Clegg finished 5th on both Saturday and Sunday. (Brochures also available at all Park City Activities Racks) l DEER VALLEY Utah Roundup by Kurt Kidman Jazz hit sour note Not so long ago the Utah Jazz were hot. They had been winning on the road end they trailed the Dallas Mavericks by just one game in the National Basketball Association's Midwest Division. But, then the Jazz hit the road. Four straight losses at Seattle, Portland, Phoenix and San Antonio have reduced Utah's record to 21-16. And despite the Mavs having problems on an eastern roadswing, the Jazz are now two and a half games behind Dallas. Things might get a little bit better for Utah as it plays five of its next ::ix names in the Salt Palace and may be able to tighten the gap before the A1J-Star A1J-Star break, Feb. 8. The latest voting totals don't look good for Jazz players and 1 1 doesn't look like anybody will make the starting five. Utah's best player so far this year, Karl Malone, should get picked as a substitute (if there is any justice in the world). The college basketball teams had a fairly successful weekend, except for Weber State which continues to struggle with a 1-12 record (bet the alumni who gave Wildcat coach Larry Farmer a Mercedes last year wish they could get the keys back). Utah State University broke a four-game losing streak with a 73-69 win over The University of the Pacific. The University of Utah and Brigham Young University both beat San Diego State University and the University of Hawaii. The Utes will play Air Force Friday, the Y. will play the Cadets on Thursday, and then Utah and BYU will play each other Saturday night. It will be a big game as the two teams seem to be possibly the two best ( I said possibly UTEP and Wyoming fans) in the Western Athletic Conference this year.
