According to the American Ski Federation (ASF), an association which represents ski related businesses busi-nesses in Washington, D.C., the federal government regularly passes legislation directly affecting the ski industry. Elizabeth Kellam was in Park City this week to explain some of the current issues the. American Ski Federation is working on and to enlist support for the organization. The ASF was formed in 1973, she explained, to protest pro-test the government's proposal pro-posal to close gas stations on weekends. "Obviously it would have slit the ski industry's throat," Kellam said. Since then the ASF has grown and expanded its lobbying efforts on behalf of many ski-related industries. Through its monthly newsletter news-letter the ASF educates its members by explaining how mortgage interest rate legislation, legis-lation, changes in tip reporting report-ing laws for restaurants, federal policies regarding tourism and zoning changes on federal lands could affect the future of their busi- "Right now the Treasury Department is trying to eliminate mortgage interest rate deductions for second homes, which could affect people's decisions to invest in property in Park City. We are lobbying against it," said Kellam. The ASF was also instrumental in removing potential ski area sites from the RARE II wilderness designations. "We are just becoming aware of what they can do for us," commented Packy Longfellow at Park City Ski Area. "On a one to one basis they can't do much but in representing the industry as a whole they can. The ski industry is so fragmented it is nice to have a consolidated way to represent our common com-mon interests." The ASF also helped to obtain a federal charter for the National Ski Patrol and the organizationhas worked with lawyers on revisions in product liability laws. They also offer seminars for lawyers explaining the precedents pre-cedents being set in ski-related ski-related insurance cases. While monitoring upcoming upcom-ing legislation in Washington and determining its potential effect on the ski industry, the ASF is also researching consumer attitudes toward skiing and assembling a library of ski industry-related industry-related data. Business owners who are interested in more information about joining join-ing the American Ski Federation Fed-eration may write to the ASF at 499 S.
