Thanks Editor: Dear Park City: Thank you! Brian Schiller The people's choice Editor: I attended the Park City District Board Meeting Tuesday night and I would like to publicly make the following personal statements: (1) To the 500 concerned citizens of the Park City School District ... Thank you for your overwhelming support for Dr. Schiller. Please I urge you to hang in there attend meetings, write letters, continue to be supportive until we see the unjust treatment of Dr. Schiller remedied and he is reinstated. (2) To the Staff of the Treasure Mountain Middle School ... I want to say your 100 percent overwhelming and wholehearted support of Dr. Schiller was a positive tribute to a good principal. Continue to educate our children in the fine manner which you have displayed the past Vfc years and know that we the parents and citizens of Park City hear your cries. (3) To Dr. Schiller ... I would like to say we are sorry that a good administrator ad-ministrator loved by staff, students and parents has to be put through this trying, painful ordeal please don't be disheartened we need your innovative, in-novative, caring, honest administration ad-ministration in the district. (4) To Dr. Goodworth ... I want to say I have lived in this school district for SVi years and have seen nothing but chaos, disruption and litigation under your leadership. It's time to stop passing the buck and take a good hard look at what has really caused all the dissention in this school district. Principals come and go, board members come and go and you Dr. Goodworth stay and so do the problems. Therefore, I conclude that you are the cause of dissention in the district. (5) To the Park City School Board ... I want to say Dr. Schiller's reinstat-ment reinstat-ment is not your personal choice to make. You are elected by the people of this district to represent them and it should be very obvious to you that these 500 citizens who attended last night's meeting want no, demand Dr. Schiller's reinstatement and you as their elected officials must represent repre-sent their wishes. It's a simple choice the only choice the people's choice. Listen to us! Gini Smith Concern about turnover Editor: To Whom it May Concern: Having children in the Park City School System, I have been disturbed and disconcerted with the turnover of qualified, innovative and concerned educators in our school system. It is time for the citizens within the Park City School District to voice their concern and to question the reasoning behind this latest termination of Dr. Schiller. By outward appearances, over the past years, the termination of some educators has been to cure the symptoms of a disease rather than cure the disease itself. Should the Park City School Board be adamant about their position without satisfying the questions from public input, the board members should be reminded of the citizens who have elected them into off ice. My apologies for not being able to attend at-tend this public hearing as a result of my commission responsibilities. Sincerely, Commissioner Ron Perry Open your minds Editor: Park City people rallied Tuesday night at the Park City School Board meeting to air their support of Dr. Schiller and ask the Board to reinstate him. This was not a small group, but five hundred people. I have lived in Park City 5 '.2 years and I'm so mad that Superintendent Goodworth and his board have again disrupted the education of my child. Education and children are not their primary concern but more important is controlling and constant political turmoil. Does the board not realize that it takes time to pull a staff together and get a school working in a positive direction but we change principals prin-cipals in this district like the "Changing of the Seasons." It says something when 100 percent of the middle school staff stands behind their principal and I personally have worked with this staff and seen it toally divided. What a great accomplishment and yet this does not seem to be important impor-tant to our district heirarchy Dr. Goodworth. How can we ever work on curriculum when we're constantly in a state of change. It just becomes ridiculous! This year if Dr. Schiller is not reinstatedwe rein-statedwe will be looking for two principals prin-cipals and will lose a lot of excellent teachers. What a sad state of affairs and who suffers the most the Park City students. This is just another example of how our superintendent seems to feel threatened by progressive, innovative people. We're tired of this and we're finally speaking out. This has happened too many times and Dr. Schiller is just another scapegoat he isn't the issue! I was angry and sad Tuesday night sitting there listening to the positive input given about the middle school staff and Dr. Schiller. The school board did not hear what the public was saying. At times they looked bored. Now the president of the board has said the group was stacked. How can you stack five hundred educated people? If this was done, it was an amazing accomplishment and the important im-portant fact is these people were there and they wanted the board to listen to them. Obviously, Mr. Avise does not think we are able to make competent decisions by ourselves and that he should make them for us. It's time for Superintendent Good-worth Good-worth and the Board to listen. We feel you've made a bad decision and it was not in the best interest of our children and their education. My priority is with the quality of education my child is getting and not whether this district heirarchy has complete control of the teachers and principals. They're human beings we don't live in a military state or do we? Stop the politics and let Dr. Schiller and his staff get on with what they do best education. Let's not go backwards back-wards again! Listen to the people, represent us. Do your job. Stop being so deaf and blind. Open your eyes, ears and minds! Danielle Bean Taxpayer and concerned parent Applause from McComb Editor: I applaud the efforts and actions taken by staff, students, and citizens at Tuesday night's school board meeting. This is truly an example of participatory par-ticipatory democracy, of the new belief in power through networking rather than power by heirarchy. It is refreshing to see people who can and will speak their own thoughts, instead in-stead of mindlessly parroting someone else's. It is gratifying to know that even under threats, people are still willing to take a stand and defend personal per-sonal beliefs. Even a wise fifteen-year-old I know recognizes how difficult it is to be different, dif-ferent, to buck peer pressure, and to resist having other people's attempts to control your life. I applaud all those who will not compromise com-promise their convictions. "Vive la difference!" Therein lies our strength and potential tor growth. Nancy McComb Parent Appreciation from Rebecca's family Editor: We, the family of Rebecca Kennard, want to express our appreciation to those of you who have been so generous with your show of love and support. The beautiful flowers and numerous cards, calls and contributions con-tributions have helped to soften our grief. We sincerely thank you. Lori, Randy, Randy Jr. and Kenyon Kennard A tribute to a friend Editor: Tuesday, March 22, was the one-year anniversary of the tragedy of Gus Mora's passing away. It was a shock and a very sad time for most of us in Park City, especially for those who knew him well. It was only a matter of time, it seemed, until an avalanche claimed the life of a skier in the backcountry on our side of the Wasatch. Unfortunately, Unfortu-nately, Gus was the one who taught so many of us a very important lesson. But a good thing has come from this tragic event that shook so many. The backcountry skiers of Park City have wised up, you might say, in that almost everybody who skis the back country nowadays is prepared to deal with the ever-present possibility of an avalanche ava-lanche burial. This was not the case for many before March 22, 1982. This season, there have been separate instances in the Wasatch where burials have occurred and members of the party involved performed successful searches and live rescues. And so far this year there have been no deaths in avalanche-related avalanche-related incidents in Utah. Tuesday morning, on the anniversary anniver-sary of Gus's death, the Park City full-time patrol had a very special tribute and a salute to Gus in Pine Cone Bowl adjacent to Scott's Bowl in the Jupiter area. A seven-bomb salute was followed by a 14-man ski run salute by those of us present who knew him well. It was an inspiring moment. We can all be grateful from what we have learned, the hard way, from a dear friend. The fond memory of Gus will be in our hearts forever. Ray Santa Maria and the Park City Ski Patrol Schiller is not the issue Dear Editor, Dear school board members, I have never written a letter to the editor or to the school board before. But then, I have never before lived in an area where the superintendent of the school board deems it necessary to fire the principals of various schools with such regularity. It is most unfortunate that a man of such high caliber as Dr. Brian Schiller needs to be defended and supported at this time. While professionalism and dedication to the educational system is, indeed, the issue here, Dr. Schiller and his performance is not! My personal experiences as per several issues during the past school year were in every instance carefully thought out and expertly handled by this man, using as his criteria, the welfare of the children. Under his expert guidance, the high quality of the entire staff of Treasure Mountain Middle School emanates a total feeling of teamwork and camaraderie. As so succinctly put by my daughter as she addressed her fellow classmates and the rest of the audience at the 8th grade graduation exercises of Carl Winters Middle School last year. "The faculty at Carl Winters Middle School really seems to enjoy the professions they have chosen for themselves as well as the friendships they have made with each other. There is a true spirit of caring here." Can this be the same "unruly and divided staff" that I have been hearing about? As a concerned parent, I strive daily to provide my children with as much stability, support and opportunity in their lives as I possibly can in order that they might better prepare themselves to become self-confident, responsible, productive adults. How possibly can my goals, much less theirs, be achieved when this educational educa-tional system is in a constant state of turmoil? It is the opinion of my son, a sixth grader at Treasure Mountain Middle School, that "If the school board fires Dr. Schiller, they are not only making a big mistake, but they are really dumb!" Dr. Schiller is a caring, dedicated, extra-ordinary educator. Our kids are truly "his kids." I implore you to right this outrageous wrong by renewing his contract for the coming year so that our children may continue to blossom and grow under his excellent guidance. Sincerely, Patti Bruce The public has spoken Editor: Thank you Park City citizens for standing up for Dr. Schiller as well as the innovative quality education he represents and we expect for our children. As parents, it is especia.ly reassuring to know that the community com-munity as a whole is willing to accept the responsibility for the education of our children. As concerned citizens, taxpayers and parents we have demonstrated our insistance for quality education and our belief in the democratic process. The public has spoken clearly, concisely. con-cisely. Park City School Board, have you listened to your constituents? Park City School Board, have you acted in behalf of the best interest of our children?
