Park City's Danny Tebbs, who has moved into the forefront among the JIV (10- and 11-year-old) skiers this season, was more than four seconds a run faster than his closest competition Sunday in a pair of giant slalom races held at the Park City Ski Area. In capturing two first-place first-place trophies, Tebbs outclassed out-classed a talented field which included second-place Gary Gibson of Snowbird. "Danny Tebbs was skiing exceptionally well Sunday," Park City coach Dick Stoner observed later. Tebbs wasn't the only Park City winner of the day. Far from it. Shannon Nobis (JIV girls), Heather Circo (JV girls) and Jason Parkin (JV boys) each came home with a first-place trophy. Nobis won her first race by more than three seconds over Falesha Favero of Nordic Nor-dic Valley, but Favero came back to win the rematch by about 310 of a second. Circo was more than eight seconds behind Hope Rich of Snowbasin in her first race, but finished well ahead of Nordic Valley's Stacey Brown to take the top prize in the second race. Parkin also struggled to find his form in the first race, finishing fourth, but overtook Paul McCoard of Solitude to win the rematch by a four-second margin. Two of the most impressive im-pressive performances of the day came from Carter Gregory and C.J. Baltz among the JIV boys. By the luck of the draw, they were among the last to start their first runs. But both had worked their way into the top 10 in each race by the time the results were tabulated. Gregory and Baltz were helped by the fact that the snow remained sound throughout the day. "The course was fine," Stoner reported. "In fact we used the bottom section for all four runs." He said nearly all the racers managed to finish. What Danny Tebbs did to the competition in Park City Leilani Soares did in Idaho Falls. Competing in two slalom races at Kelly Canyon, Idaho, Soares posted the fastest time in three of four runs to win a pair of first-place first-place trophies. Her competition com-petition included Jill Robins and Lori Greely of the University of Utah. "She didn't wait for anybody," Park City Coach Jim Clifford said later. "Her second run Saturday, as the race director for Kelly Canyon said, was the most awesome run of the weekend." Soares had the fastest time in both runs Saturday and the first run Sunday. When she was finally overtaken in Sunday's second run, it was by teammate Tori Pillinger. Pillinger started slowly, finishing fifth Saturday, more than three seconds behind her teammate. But she closed the gap Sunday, finishing less than seven tenths ten-ths of a second out of first place and a comfortable two seconds ahead of the third- place skier, Kathy Hoffman of Nordic Valley. Park City skiers were less successful in the men's races, against a strong contingent con-tingent of college skiers, including in-cluding Herald Gefle and Albert Innamorati of the University of Utah. In Saturday's race, Park City's Scott Williams finished ninth overall, third among the JI (16- and 17-year-old) men. And on Sunday Sun-day he posted the seventh-best seventh-best time in the first run before catching a tip the next time down the mountain. Rolfe Sandberg, who injured in-jured his back in a downhill race in Sun Valley early in January, was a respectable 16th Sunday, with only about two days of training under his belt. "He's just trying to get back on his skis," Clifford observed. This weekend, the Park City JII and JIII (12- to 15-year-old) skiers will travel to Snow Basin for a pair of downhill races. Results will help determine the qualifiers for the Junior Olympics later in the season. mm immMm qP- ' !-lrr, III I L 1 .li 'Vr QUI K V.
