Mahre, from the United Slates, and Ingemar Sten-mark, Sten-mark, from Sweden, longtime long-time rivals on the World Cup tour, were both overshadowed over-shadowed Tuesday as Stig Strand, a teammate of Stenmark, grabbed his first World Cup victory in the slalom at Madonna di Cam-piglio, Cam-piglio, Italy. Strand, in fourth place after the first run, took a page out of Stenmark's book, charging from behind to defeat his famous neighbor by three quarters of a second in the second run. Mahre rallied from ninth place in the first run to finish third overall behind Strand and Stenmark. He posted the fastest time in the second run after being 1.18 seconds off the pace after run number one. Rounding out the top ten were Yugoslavia's Bojan Krizaj in fourth, Paolo De Chiesa of Italy in fifth, Austria's Christian Orlain-sky Orlain-sky in sixth, teammate Franz Gruber in seventh, American Steve Mahre in eighth, France's Michel Cinac in ninth and Ivano Edalini of Italy in tenth. In men's downhill action, old pro Franz Klammer of Austria won his 24th World Cup race Monday, beating Peter Mueller of Switzerland by half a second in Val Gardena, Italy. It was Klammer's third top-three finish in three events this season, not bad for a 29-year-old who three years ago was written off by the European press and dropped from the 1980 Olympic Olym-pic team. "My heart is young," smiled Klammer. "I like downhill skiing and racing so much. Today was one of my greatest victories because Peter Mueller and (Austrian) (Aus-trian) Harti Weirather are in a SF A SON'S GREETINGS Park Avenue Clothing & Collectible Main Street 649-1385 great shape. " Rounding out the top ten were Urs Raeber of Switzerland Switzer-land in third, teammate Franz Heiner in fourth, Weirather in fifth, Canadians Canad-ians Todd Brooker and Ken Read in sixth and seventh, Leonard Stock of Austria in eighth, Conradin Cathomen of Switzerland in ninth and teammate Brun Kernen in tenth. Other finishers included Andy Luhn in 24th, Andy Chambers Cham-bers in 30th, Tris Cochrane in 33rd, and Doug Powell in 35th. It was the second downhill race in two days for the men on the World Cup tour. On Sunday Conradin Cathomen won his first World Cup downhill on Val Gardena's tricky Saslong mountain course. Austrian Erwin Resch finished second with teammate Franz Klammer in third. A fresh 16-inch snowfall hindered some of the racers, including Switzerland's Peter Mueller, who finished 19th, more than two seconds off the pace. Rounding out the top ten were Urs Raeber in fourth, Ken Read fifth, Harti Weirather Wei-rather in sixth, Franz Hein-zer Hein-zer of Switzerland in seventh, Leonard Stock in eighth with teammates Helmut Hel-mut Hoeflehner and Peter Wirnsberger in ninth and tenth. Phil Mahre again posted the best time by an American, Ameri-can, finishing 18th. Andy Luhn was close behind in 26th place. In women's World Cup competition, American Tam-ara Tam-ara McKinney fell upon hard times last week, losing her lead in the overall standings to Switzerland's Erika Hess. McKinney seemed on her way to her second win in a week at the World Cup; slalom in Piancavallo, Italy Friday. But that was before ' she straddled a gate about 10 seconds from the bottom of . her second run. When the snow had; cleared, Erika Hess had? taken first place, followed by Perrine Pelen of France and . Christin Cooper of the United . States. Cooper's finish,, coupled with her 16th place in the downhill held Dec. 15 in Sansicario, gave her first place in the second women's combined of the season.
