Show Park City News Thursday, December 23, 1982 Page C3 Wildcats mutilate Miners PARK CITY by John Kinch "It was a bad dream," said Park City basketball coach Bruce Reid about his Miners' loss to South Summit, Sum-mit, 34-72. "This was the worst a Park City team has been beaten since I have been coaching (six years)." The drubbing on Dec. 17 in Kamas gave the Miners a 0-5 record and forced Reid to adjust his sights for the remainder of the season. "After a loss like this, we have more realistic goals for ourselves, one of which is the determination to show everyone that we really aren't that bad," said Reid. But the Miners were that bad last Friday in their Region 11 opener. The 3-2 Wildcats scored at will, having an "easier time than expected," according to South Summit Coach Kent Frazier. The Miners started off poorly in the first quarter; their passes went everywhere every-where but to each other. When they did get off a shot, it did not fall and they were unable to grab the rebound, a problem that has plagued them all season. The Miners managed four points to the Wildcats' 15 in the first quarter. "We were shell-shocked," said Reid. The shock did not wear off by the second quarter. Normally Nor-mally high-scoring players like Chris Cooper, Tim Tebbs, and Pete Gilvarry were virtually unheard from. Frazier's strategy, to shut down these players, was successful. Meanwhile, the Miners were unable to contain the fast-breaking Wildcats, with Matt Flinders leading South Summit with 10 points. Park City guard Doug Vincent scored four points towards the end of the quarter bringing the score to 17-35 at the half. Park City was never able to overcome that huge deficit. defi-cit. Midway through the third period the score was South Summit 46, Park City 23. The Wildcats continued to roll, scoring 17 points to the Miners' 10 points in the quarter. For Park City in the fourth quarter, the only positive sign was the play of Tom Flinders, who had not done much in the previous games. Flinders' steady play and free-throw shooting gave him eight points for the game. Late in the game Reid replaced many of the start ers with second stringers, who battled South Summit's shock troops to the final buzzer. "Playing South Summit just reaffirmed what I said earlier about them being one of the two best 1-A teams in the state," Reid said. He added that the Park City players want to prove to themselves that they are better than they played against South Summit. At the end of their Monday night practice, all of them voluntarily ran a sprinting drill, known as "killer," in hopes of improving themselves. them-selves. On Jan. 7, the Miners will get a chance to start the new year off right against Manila. Man-ila. A win there would help Park City regroup for the next league game against North Summit on Jan. 14. Reid thinks that the Miners can turn the season around, as South Summit apparently has done. "Earlier this season South Summit was whipped by Wasatch by 30 points. But they didn't quit and came back to beat us by 38 a few weeks later. Park City has a chance to do the same with its season," he said.
