Show The Newspaper Thursday, April 1, 1982 Page B3 Bill Koch joins Phil Mahre in World Cup spotlight 'tiiML ' 1 ' """" """ If they're a little loose in the U.S. Ski Team office this week, there's good reason. American skiers wrapped up not one but two overall World Cup championships last weekend as nordic competitor Bill Koch hurdled past Sweden's Thomas Wassberg by winning the final race of the season in Castelrotto, Italy. Koch's dramatic victory gave him the overall nordic World Cup while fellow American Phil Mahre picked up the alpine counterpart Koch, trailing Wassberg by eight World Cup points going into the 15-kilometer race in Castelrotto, needed a win to guarantee himself of the title, or a second-place finish if Wassberg did not win. As it turned out, Koch finished first and Wassberg ended up fifth, more than a minute off the pace. The final World Cup standings stand-ings find Koch in first with 121 points, followed by Wassberg Wass-berg (114) and Harri Kirves-niemi Kirves-niemi of Finland (106). In seventh place is another American, Dan Simoneau of Livermore Falls, Maine, with 60 points. Phil Mahre's first-place finish in the alpine standings was less dramatic (he had wrapped up the title several weeks ago) but no less impressive. Mahre finished the season with 309 World Cup points and a huge lead of Sweden's Ingemar Stenmark (211) points. Close behind Stenmark was Phil's twin brother, Steve, with 183. Not only did Phil Mahre finish first in the overall World Cup standings, but he also finished first in slalom, giant slalom and combined. By doing so he became the only man to win four titles in one season since Jean-Claude Jean-Claude Killy turned the trick in 1967, the first year of World Cup competition. The only World Cup title to escape Mahre's grasp was the downhill championship, Judge drubs Park City in soccer by John Sundquist The agony of defeat. It has to happen for every team and the Park City High School soccer club is no exception. Top-ranked Judge High School proved to be the first nemesis of the young season as Park City came up on the short side, 6-0, last Friday. The loss gives Park City a 1-1 season record. According to team spokesman Shawn Glieden, the field was not to their liking. "Sunnyside Park has thin grass at any time and this early in the spring it is especially bad. There are a lot of clay areas making for bad footing, and several of our players had no cleats." The other big problem was the opposition. "Judge is a hot team," said Glieden. "They have it together. They must have been playing together for a long time. They beat East High School and they were ranked high last year in high school soccer." In spite of the onesided score, Glieden said several people played well for Park City. "Chad Hughes did well and is playing in his first year of soccer ever. Also, our two goalies, Darren Lawless and Tom Tebbs, played well." Tebbs, another rookie for Park City, played the second China Ridge Open 7 days week, Mon. tkfi Fit 11:30 a.m. - ll;00p.m. t . - a Sat. k Suiu Egg which went to Canadian Steve Podborski. Although Mahre had a firm grasp on the overall title, he and Stenmark were in a virtual deadlock for the giant slalom and slalom titles going into last week's World Cup finals. The giant slalom title was decided in the March 24 race in Sansicario, Italy, when Mahre finished third, two. places ahead of Stenmark. Two days later, in Mont-genevre, Mont-genevre, France, Mahre completed the sweep by winning the final slalom race of the season, half a second ahead of Stenmark. Swiss teenager Joel Gaspoz was third. It marked the first time since 1975 that Stenmark had not captured the World Cup slalom title. Mahre was the model of consistency this season, finishing in the top three in all but one of the World Cup technical (slalom and giant slalom) races. But let's not forget the women. The American women's team scored more World Cup points than any other nationality this season, finishing 60 points ahead of West Germany in the finalw omen's Nations Cup standings. stand-ings. Christin Cooper of Sun Valley finished third in the final overall standings, the best finish ever by an American woman. The American team had two other women in the top 10: Cindy Nelson in fifth and Tamara McKinney in ninth. Downhill specialist Holly Flanders recorded a pair of wins and ended the season tied for second place in that discipline. The 1981-82 season also witnessed the mielstone for Park City's Roxanne Toly, who picked up her first Wodl Cup points in December by finishing 13th in a downhill race in Saalbach, Austria. Let's see: the start of the 1982-83 season is only about eight months away. half in the nets. Darren Lawless, who recently completed com-pleted his senior year in basketball for Park City, has played soccer before in Colorado. Even though Park City was shut out in the game, the score is deceiving, Glieden said. "Their fullbacks were not very strong, but we did not take enough shots, and when we did our footing was bad. The game started off with a play which took us right to the goal mouth and I hit the post. We did that quite often during the game." At the other end of the field the story was one of loose defense. "We tended to bunch up around our goal and they (Judge) just spread out to the sides," said Glieden. "Judge scored all their goals from close in because we ran to the ball when it was kicked into the goal area and left people open unguarded. I don't know how it happened but we would run to cover someone and just fall down." Weather permitting, the Park City soccer club will be playing six home games this season. The first home match is scheduled for April 6 against Jordan. If the field is not dry by this time, the game will be rescheduled and the next home game will be on April 13 against Judge.
