Wrestling photo by John Sundqulst Miners finish third in regional; sectional tourney set for Saturday by John Sundquist In the Region 11 Tournament Tourna-ment the Park City Wrestling Wrest-ling team came in third behind North and South Summit last Friday afternoon after-noon by losing in their best weight brackets. Normally the Miners can count on coming through with valuable points in the heavier weight classes, 138 lbs and up. But fortune smiled on the other guy, in this case North Summit predominately, and so the final rankings found Park City with two seconds and seven thirds: The Miners had no entry in the heavyweight heavy-weight class. South Rich came in fourth place. The final score of the tournament put North Summit Sum-mit ahead of South Summit by one point, 128-127. However, South Summit has protested the score because be-cause of a disagreement over the scoring in the heavyweight class. As of this writing the trophy has been given to North Summit for first place pending an investigation inves-tigation by the Region 11 wrestling officials. Park City totaled 59 points in the regional, and will send at least nine men to the sectional held this Saturday, Feb. 5, at the College of Eastern Utah in Price. Four wrestlers from Regions Re-gions 11 and 13 will advance from the sectionals to the state tournament at Weber State College, in Ogden, on Feb. 12 and 13. This Friday, 119 lb Geoff Palmer will wrestle off with the fifth place entry from Region 13, and if he wins he will go to the sectionals. Tom Tebbs, the heavyweight for Park City will go to the sectionals if he can gain enough weight to surpass the 185-lb minimum in the heavyweight bracket. For the Park City team, it was a frustrating regional tournament as indicated by Coach Wayne Carlson. "We lost four we should have won. I was disappointed because I thought we would win those matches." John Howard at 138 lbs lost in overtime 4-2, but Carlson is convinced the referee should not have awarded two stalling calls in favor of Ron Gunn of North Summit. (Ron Gunn pinned Howard in the last match between these two the week before in Kamas.) James Meekins, at 145 lbs was leading 4-0 over Jay McNeil of South Summit with 45 seconds left in the match when he was pinned. In the 167 lb class, Chad Hughes was ahead all the way and then unexpectedly was caught on his back by Pete Anderson of North Summit and was pinned. Finally, in the 185 lb bracket, Greg Bair, who had pinned Mike Calderwood of North Summit in their two previous meetings, lost in a close 6-5 decision. "I don't feel real bad because virtually all of them will go to the sectional," commented Coach Carlson, "except they will have bad seeding. North Summit is a good team. They are well coached. They seem to get up for tournaments; I mean the coach can get them psyched up." Here is how the individual Miners placed; Sean Kra-jeski, Kra-jeski, 98 lb, third place. Rex Fletcher, 105 lb, third place. Joe Read, 112 lb, fourth place. Jess Sieverts, 126 lb, second place. Paul Carpenter, Carpen-ter, 132 lb, third place. John Howard, 138 lb, third place. James Meekins, 145 lb, third place. Bill Reed, 155 lb, second place. Chad Hughes, 167 lb, third place. Greg Bair, 185 lb, third place, Tom Tebbs, heavyweight, unable to make weight.
