Show The Newspaper Thursday, February 5, 1981 Page 19 Sharp duo opens exhibit in watercolor, woodcarying The work of two former Park City residents, John and Jennifer Sharp, will be displayed in the Kimball Art Center Feb. 8 through March 5. The exhibit will include paintings by Jennifer and wood sculptures by John. ' The Sharps first met during one of the early Park City Arts Festivals. For nearly seven years, the couple ran the Sharp Gallery on Park City's Main Street. The gallery served as a showcase for John's wood-carvings wood-carvings and Jennifer's watercolors. John started carving when he was temporarily disabled with a broken back. He has gone on to make woodcar-ving woodcar-ving a career. John's subject matter is drawn from western life and history. His carvings have included cowboys. Indians, trappers and wildlife. Unlike clay sculpting, woodcarving does not allow for making changes and correcting errors. According to the artist, his medium involves in-volves "taking off everything every-thing that doesn't belong." belong." Wood for one of John's sculptures is first laminated into a large block. One profile of the intended piece is then cut out with a band-saw. band-saw. After that, all of the work is done with a mallet, knife and chisels. Completion Com-pletion of a large piece often takes as long as four or five months of full-time work. Jennifer has been earning her living with watercolors for the past 12 years. According Accor-ding to the artist, she works in "a more or, less traditional, realistic manner." man-ner." Scenes of Park City, flowers and still lifes have been favorite themes. Since the Sharps' move to Wisconsin, Wiscon-sin, Jennifer has begun to paint scenes from Mineral Point and surrounding the farmland. She has been the recipient of numerous local awards and the best in show award in an eight-state show. In addition, she has had her work Jennifer and .John Sharp published in a children's book, "The Lion's Haircut." She has had one-woman shows at the Salt Lake Art Center. Weber Stan? College, Salt Lake Public Library, Rock Springs. Wyoming, and Boulder, Colorado. Contemporary music will be the sound of the day at Sneaker's in the Racquet Club, when Justin Allison plays at the Sunday Brunch from 12:30-1 p.m. Third Power will be at Jody's on upper Main Street Tuesday through Saturday from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. For the $i weekday cover charge ($2 on weekends), you can hear Third Powerplay jazz, rock and original music.
