Gateway to the "Great Circle of the Southwest" and the Canyonlands and Arches National Parks. Its history abounds with accounts of pioneer hardships, encounters with Indians and famous cattle rustlers. Moab offers excellent air, jeep and river tours of the Canyonlands area. 2. FISHER TOWERS. The scenic drive to Fisher Towers on Highway 128 follows the Colorado River and has often been used as a setting for Hollywood productions. The Fisher Towers are a dazzling series of red rock spires soaring 1,500 feet above the valley floor. 3. CASTLE VALLEY. Below this valley resides a salt deposit as big as Maryland and as much as two and a half miles thick. Under pressure from hundreds of feet of rock, the salt rises into faults and weak spots, warping the surface upward. As the rock strata cracks, water seeps in and dissolves the salt, causing the surface to drop. This heaving process, combined with erosion from wind and rain, created the wonders of this area. 4. SCENIC MOUNTAIN LOOP. A spectacular drive that illustrates the magnificent contrasts con-trasts between desert floor and mountain range. 5. ARCHES NATIONAL PARK. The greatest' concentration of natural and stone arches in the world is here. Many of the more than 90 arches can be seen from the paved roads, others by a short hike over well marked paths. Visitors center. 6 DEADHORSE POINT STATE PARK. Named for a band of wild horses trapped on the point's natural corral so long that . they died of thirst. It is an almost island-mesa, with an overlook 2,000 feet down a sheer canyon wall .to the Colorado River, and a panorama of hundreds of miles of canyons and buttes with the La Sal Mountains in the background. Well-equipped visitors center and museum. 7. UPHEAVAL DOME. West of Dead Horse Point, this geologically unique sandstone crater sinks 1,000 feet into the gound. 8. GRANDVIEW POINT. Accessible by dirt -road, this point offers a panoramic view of the Green and Colorado Rivers as they churn through the depth's of Canyonlands National Park. 9. MONUMENT CANYON. Accessible by jeep only. Gigantic red rock formations at the area where the Green and Colorado Rivers meet. MOAB. The starting point for this tour that includes pre-Columbian Indian ruins, -prehistoric cave drawings, giant stone mountains, spectacular eroded formations ' and natural bridges. 2. CANYON RIM RECREATION AREA. Windwhistle and Hatch Point offer camping and water. Spectacular views are available at Needles Overlook (accessible by paved road) and Anticline Overlook (16 miles on graveled road). 3. CHURCH ROCK. A gigantic stone monolith that rises directly out of the desert, resembling resem-bling a church. 4. INDIAN CREEK STATE PARK. Here you'll find Newspaper Rock. The inscriptions cut into this sandstone cliff mural span about 1,000 years, from figures carved by ancient Indians to those carved more recently by Utes and early white settlers. Primitive campgrounds with toilets, picnic tables and grills. No water. 5. SQUAW SPRINGS CAMPGROUNDS AND CANYONLANDS PARK NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS. HEAD-QUARTERS.
