Show Page 12 by S Once again the Wells family gathers around the tube, pulling those chairs in closer, adjusting our fine tuning, and preparing ourselves for PBS' antidote for spring fever. Keeping pace with the latest ratings winners, the weeknight serials, PBS. who set the trend last vear with "Upstairs, Downstairs," brings you "Poldark," a 16 episode adventure series spanning 10 years of revolution in England. "Poldark," considered to be the sexiest thing on British television last season, is an 18th Century impoverished aristocrat with a strong social conscience, a dashing swashbuckler striking fear in the hearts of his enemies, and a lover extraordinaire who keeps the ladies on both sides of the screen coming back for more. Ross Poldark, played by actor Robin Ellis, is a scar-faced hero, who loses on occasion but never gives up the fight against corruption and struggles to bring peace to the feuding families of the aristocracy and justice to the underdogs. "Poldark" will be aired Sunday, May 8at 9:00, PBS' gift to the Mom's of America. ' It's long been recognized that a fine film, like fine music, has international appeal. Unfortunately, Unfor-tunately, Americans tend to ignore foreign movies, except for films by a handful of superstar super-star directors (many people tend to believe foreign cinema is all like Bergman's films). Thus, it's nice to see films like Cousin Cousine, which is simply an enjoyable little French farce, come to the States. French comedy is, to a great extent, a genre of its own. Gallic comedy consists mainly of taking some social gathering (wedding, funeral, Bar-mitzva) Bar-mitzva) and making it slowly disintegrate into chaos. Short, quick sight gags are the rule, with plot advancement mainly serving as a way to get to the next sdcial situation. Naturally, Cousin Cousine follows the typical format. ... The other wife and husband get together to make their spouses jealous and relieve their boredom. In the process they fall in love and start behaving in a scandalous manner. The formerly wanton husband and wife are appalled, but cannot say anything lest they be known as hypocrites. The affair is obvious to the rest of the relatives, but they're too busy being crazy to intervene. So Cousin Cousine is a comic love story, the likes of which most Americans have never seen. The French are not slick filmmakers, something that adds to the charm and character of their films. The lack of slickness is more than compensated com-pensated by the zest the French put into their film. If the world is moving toward the Global Village that Marshall McLuhen has hypothesized, then Americans might get to see more French farces. After all, Cousin" Cousine proves that everybody laughs in the same language. 1:45 5 NBA Play-off 2:00 4 Golf 7 Dance in America 3:00 2 Grandstand 7 American Short Story 3:30 2 First Estate: Religion in Review 4:00 2 Star Trek 4 Movie Drama 5 Championship Fishing 4:30 5 CBS News 7 John Berryman 5:00 2 Jacques Cousteau 5 Mowgli's Brothers 7 Soccer 5:30 4 Welcome Bock, Kotter 5 Pilot 6:00 2 World of Disney 4 My Mom's Having a Baby 5 60 Minutes 7 Consumer Survival Kit 6:30 7 World Press 7:00 4 Movie Drama 5 Rhoda 7 Firing Line 7:30 3 Phyllis 1:00 2 Movie Drama 5 Movie Drama 7 Previn and the Pitts burgh 9:00 4 Starsky & Hutch 7 Masterpiece Theatre 10:00 2 Newswotch 2 4 Action News 5 Eyewitness News 7 Pollisers 10:30 2 Take Two 4 Movie Drama 10:40 5 CBS News 10:55 5 Ironside 11:00 2 Movie Comedy 11:55 S Peter Marshall 12:00 4 Mod Squad 1:00 4 ABC News 1:25 5 News Final SUNDAY MOVIES 11:00 2 "Riders of Destiny," John Wayne, Cecilia Parker 4:00 4 "Shootout in a One-Dog One-Dog Town," Richard Crenna 7:00 4 "The Boy in the Plostic Bubble, 'John Travol- v ta, Glynnis O'Connor 4:00 2 "Fire," Ernest Borg-nine, Borg-nine, Vera Miles 5 "White Lightning," Burt Reynolds, Jennifer Jenni-fer Billingsley 10:30 4 "Class of 63, "Joan Hockett, Cliff Gorman 11:00 2 "The April Fools," Jack Lemmon, Catherine Cath-erine Deneuve MONDAY 6:00 2 Newswatch 2 4 Action News 5 Eyewitness News 7 Zoom 4:30 2 Adam-12 4 Concentration 5 Hollywood Squares 7 Sewing for a Child 7:00 2 Pilot 4 Happy Days 5 Jeffersons 7 Older People in Utah 2 Movie Adventure 4 Baseball 5 Pilot 7 MacNeilLehrer Report 5 America's Junior Miss Pageant 7 Six American Families 5 Mary Tyler Moore 7 Pallisers 5 Bob Newhart 2 Newswatch 2 4 Action News 5 Eyewitness News 7 Soundstage 2 Johnny Carson 8:00 9:00 9:30 10:00 10:30 Streets of San Francisco Gunsmoke Black Journal ABC News Toma FBI Tomorrow News Final 10:40 11:00 11:30 11:40 12:00 12:40 MONDAY MOVIES 2:00 5 "All in a Night's Work," Dean Martin, Shirley MacLaine 7:30 2 "Eiger Sanction," Clint Eastwood, George Kennedy TUESDAY 6:00 2 Newswatch 2 4 Action News 5 Eyewitness News 7 Zoom 6:30 2 Adam-12 4 Concentration 5 Let's Make a Deal 7 Once Upon a Classic 7:00 2 MovieAdventure 4 Happy Days $ Who's Who 7 Older People in Utah 7:30 4 Lav erne ft Shirley 7 MacNeilAehrer Report 1:00 4 Rich Man, Poor Man 5 Pilot 7 American Short Story 9:00 2 Police Story 5 M'ASH 7 World of Franklin ft Jefferson 9:30 5 One Day at a Time 7 Best of Ernie Kovacs 10:00 2 Newswatch 2 4 Action News 5 Eyewitness News 7 Nova 10:30 2 Johnny Carson 4 Movie Adventure 10:40 5 Gunsmoke 11:00 7 Classic Theatre Preview 11:30 7 ABC News 11:40 5 FBI 12:00 2 Tomorrow 12:30 4 ModSquod 12:40 5 News Final TUESDAY MOVIES 2:00 5 "Cougar Country" 7:00 2 "Jeremiah Johnson," Robert Redford, Will Geer, Stefan Gierosch 10:30 4 "Journey into Fear," ZeroMostel.Yvette Mimieux 7:30 |
