A 1974 survey of American families found that 54 percent argue about money more than anything else. The survey also showed that more money didn't necessarily mean less conflict. con-flict. Money is a problem because people have trouble discussing it without getting upset. I know a couple that if the word "money" is mentioned, men-tioned, an argument is almost guaranteed. Mr. Donald Williams, a Houston marriage counselor, feels that most family money disputes can be settled if money management is a joint effort. He said that willingness to compromise and make the best of a situation is also helpful. In an interesting article titled, "How to Stop Arguing About Money," by Caroline Donnelly, the following ideas are given to help curb money related arguments. Arguments about money will be less frequent if the couple takes time to plan their spending. Good planning plan-ning and arguing just don't mix. Planning is not easy. Many couples avoid looking objectively objec-tively at their financial problems in hopes it will get better by ignoring it. That's like ignoring a garden hoping the weeds won't grow. Holding a weekly or monthly mon-thly meeting is important in implementing your plan. An advantage in meeting together is that it helps the couple know who spent what. m,,A,'workabIe,1plan 'should take into consideration the needs of both husband and wife. The basis for most arguments is unmet needs. Dr. Laura Singer, a Manhattan Manhat-tan marriage counselor, asks members of families who guarrel over spending priorities to list them in descending order then compare. com-pare. This exercise is useful in helping couples discern each other's needs. Columnist Abigail Van Buren made an interesting observation when she said, "I find people can live on a lot less if they have love. If they're happy in other areas they can handle their money problems better..."
