Show V Page 6 SPORTS Wednesday, May 4, 1977 REPO RT By Brown Johnson, McComb Tops In Racquet Club Singles Tourney NBA As the Play-off season approaches its climax we find two division titles settled, while the other two are still jp in the air. The Philadelphia 76ers ended the Celtic's dream of another championship champion-ship as they beat Boston Sunday 83-77 to take the Atlantic Division title four games to three. In the Central Division, the Washington Bullets lived up to their reputation of being unable to win the big one as they lost to the Houston Rockets 108 to 103 and in the process lost the series for the Central Cen-tral Division title, four games to two. Moving westward, it was Denver prevailing in a 114-105 overtime victory over the Portland Trailblazers Sunday as the Nuggets have narrowed the Trailblazer's lead to one game; the series now stands at 3-2, Portland. On the West coast, the Golden State Warriors have evened the series for the Pacific Division title as they defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 115-106. Each team has won three games a piece. NHL The Boston Bruins gained revenge for last year's semi-final match against the Philadelphia Flyers as they defeated them 3-0 in the fourth game of this year's semi-final action. The Bruins took the series four games to none whereas last year it was the Flyers winning in five games. In other semi-final action, it appears it will probably be the Montreal Canadians earning the privilege of entering the Stanley Cup Finals against Boston as they defeated the New York Islanders 4-0 to widen their lead in the series 3 games to 1. Major League Baseball Looking briefly at the major league standings, we find three close division races while the other appears to be a runaway at this point of the season. First in the American League East, it is the Milwaukee Brewers holding a one game lead over the New York Yankees, who seemed to have attained last year's winning form. The Minnesota Min-nesota Twins hold a slim half game lead over the Kansas City Royals in A.L. West. Meanwhile in the National League, the St. Louis Cardinals have maintained their one game lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the East. The Los Angeles Dodgers appear to be running away with their division in the West, as they now hold an imposing im-posing 7 12 game lead over the defending World Champions, the Cinncinati Reds, who are definitely having their problems this year as they aren't even playing .500 baseball. Golf Whereas in the past weeks this column has been regularly reporting the victories of the young unknown lions, this week it is 46-year old Gene Littler, a long time veteran of the PGA, winning the Houston Open with a 23-under par 276. Lanny Wadkins placed second with a 9 under par 279. Littler took home $40,000 for first and Wadkins $22,800 for second. It was Littler's first tournament win since he won the Westchester Classic in July '75. Tennis Argentina stunned the United States in Davis Cup play as they won for the first time ever against the U.S. in the 77 year history of international inter-national tennis competition, Guillermo Vilas defeated Dick Stockton in form sets 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2. In a match of little consolation Brian Gottfried Got-tfried defeated Ricardo Cano 7-5, 7-5, 6-0. The victory advanced Argentina to the Davis Cup semi-finals against Australia. The winners of that series plays against the European champion for the world title. In the 1977 Alan King Tennis Classic, Jimmy Connors mastered 25 m.p.h. winds as he defeated Raul Ramirez 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. Topseeded Connors, the defending champion, took home the 1st place prize money of $50,000. Jack Johnson and Nancy McComb took top honors in the Park City Racquet Club's singles tennis tournament tour-nament held over the weekend. Johnson and McComb were tops in the men's and women's "A" competition respectively, while Jim Doilney and Sue Brightman were the cream of the "B" crop. Scoring in the round robin tournament was based on total games won, not any individual in-dividual match, except in the women's "A's" where McComb Mc-Comb and Judy Jarosz were the only entrants. The four finalists in the men's "A" division were Johnson, Stein Ericksen, Loren Keele and Bill McComb Mc-Comb and each played nine, no-add games against the other three. After battling against McComb Mc-Comb and the hard-hitting Keele, Johnson and Eriksen were even with 12 wins a piece going into their decisive face-off against each other. Johnson clinched the title by jumping to a 5-1 game advantage, ad-vantage, making it impossible im-possible for Eriksen to pull even in the nine-game match. mat-ch. Keele took second with McComb finishing fourth. McComb topped the select field of two in the women's "A's" by besting Jarosz in two straight sets. Doilney was an easy victor in the men's "B" competition. com-petition. After scoring 14 wins against finalists Roy Reynolds, who was hobbled by a sprained ankle, and Don Hutchison, he faced Steve Dering, who had amassed 12 victories against the same two opponents. Despite a rigorous training program which he followed right up to Sunday's 7 a.m. qualifying rounds, Dering w as no match for the skill and youth of his opponent 1 it ;i Doilney took a 6-3 victory and the "B" trophy. Reynolds finished third and Hutchison was fourth. Sue Brightman came from way back to w in the women's "B" crown. Forced into a playoff for the fourth finalist spot earlier in the day. Bright- man bested Sue Hughes 19 )7 for her first place finish. Following Hughes were third place Marian Avers and fourth place Fr.incim-Buck. Fr.incim-Buck.
