Show Wednesday, May 4, it So as not to interfere with Hank Louis' recent infatuation with the Deseret String Band, this week's column will interest itself with other matters. mat-ters. But first of all, I would like to thank Hal Cannon, Rich McClure, Leonard Coulson, and Ron Kane for a thoroughly enjoyable concert Saturday night past at the Kimball Art Center. Old-timey music calls upon talents maybe a little more humanistic than its more flashy offspring bluegrass. The DSB and the audience were great. Two rather tasty albums were released this past week that should prove of at least relative interest to local music fans. "01 YVaylon" The first is entitled "01 Waylon" and you get one guess as to whose music is contained therein. there-in. Headlining the LP and kicking off side one is a tune that recently became the fastest rising single in the history of Billboard Magazine's Country Music chart: "Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)," written by Chips Moman, who also produced the album, the song talks of going to Luckenbach to be with "Waylon, Willie and the Boys." Willie (Nelson) joins in on the last chorus. "If You See Me Getting Smaller" begins with an easy feelin' piano intro by Cliff "Barney" Robertson Rober-tson followed by the gentle-strength of the Jen-ning's Jen-ning's vocal: "Willie, we've been constant companions.. com-panions.. .You know the light, and the shade." Next are cover versions (As it any Waylon version ver-sion could be considered a cover) of the current Kenny Rodgers hit "Lucille" and Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline". This is the first LP the current edition of the "Waylors" has had a chance to really strut their stuff on, and this is evidenced on quite a few tunes. On "I think I'm Gonna Kill Myself" they cook, and on "Belle of the Ball" it's the blend that comes through. Side two kicks off with some hot telecaster in "Medley of Elvis Hits" (actually the two early Arthur ' "Big Boy" Cradup rockers, "That's! All Right" and "My Baby Left Me.") Local Ron Corbridge fans should be familiar with the 86W8S By Jay Meehan - KMOR Radio material.) "Till I Gain Control Again" is a bluesy love ballad penned by Rodney Crowell, currently rythm guitaristvocalist with Emmy Lou Harris' hot band. "Brand New Goodbye Song" is another one of those great "Macho " Jenning's vehicles and was also written by Producer Chips Moman. Songwriter Willis Alan Ramsey's great "Satin Sheets" is also included. Robertson's fine piano work intors "This is Getting Funny" as the album ends on the boogie beat. It's great to hear Waylon Jennings and the Waylors in such a setting. Gordon Payne and Ranee Watson provide well-arranged accoustic guitars and background vocals. Barney's wife Carter Robertson handles the female , background vocal chores as she did on Waylon's , version of "Can't You See." The Waylor's rythm . section is as solid as ever with Sherm Hayes on Bass and bandleader Richie Albright on Drums. Ralph "Moon" Mooney, one of the steel guitar's finest practitioners, has become, along with ; Albright, the basic ingredient in the Waylon Jen-ning Jen-ning sound. Waylon's own "Chicken-pickin"' telecaster work is excellent, as is Reggie Young, famed Nashville guitarist who helps out Jennings Jen-nings and his super-galoots. "01 Waylon," another great one from the ever expanding Waylon Jennings. "Lonesome Road" '" When Doc and Merle Watson visited Utah a few months back, Doc mentioned in an interview with The Newspaper that they had recently recorded an album at the brand new state-of-the-art recording studio in Bogalusa, Louisiana called "Studio In The Country." Well, that album has been released and it demonstrates that not, only are Doc and Merle two of the hottest pickers around, but that the traditional-oriented duo can; easily fit pop-material into their repertoire,' whether it be rock or country. ; This latest album is entitled "Lonesome Road" and it opens and closes with contemporary works. Side one starts off with the Alan ReynoldsBob McDill tune "I Recalled a Gypsy Woman" and side two ends with Larry Jon Wilson's "Broomstraw Philosophers and Scup-pernong Scup-pernong Wine," a song they were still rehearsing backstage at the Terrace during their recent visit. In between those songs are eight ditties that just about run the gamut of styles that have influenced in-fluenced the Watson music: "Minglewood Blues", "Mean Mama Blues" (Jimmie Rodgers), "Look Up, Look Down That Lonesone Road" (Gaither Carlton - Doc's late father-in-law to whom the album is dedicated), "My f (Mississippi John Hurt), "Blue Railroad Train" (Alton Delmore, of the Delmore Bros.), "Ain't Nobody's Fault But Mine" (traditional), "Stone Wall" (K. Twitty), and "I Ain't Going Honky-Tonkin' Anymore " (Ernest Tubb). If the studio is state-of-the-art, then so is Doc's impeccable flat-picking and fingerpicking. And then there's Merle. Whenever Doc switches to rythm, his son is turned loose on some ever-so-satisfving lead runs. EsDecially hot are his very accomplished bottleneck slide guitar work (whether flat-picked or finger-picked) and his melody line Dobro runs. Longtime Watson ban-dmember ban-dmember Michael Coleman trades bass chores with studio picker Joe Allen. Karl Himmel handles han-dles the percussion and Bob Wilson, another studio musician, is on piano.
