Show Thursday, December 18, 2008 SPRINGVILLE HERALD 15 Been There, DoneThat How so say I'm sony Liz Elder Have you ever gotten in one of those crazy-mad fits where you go around talking talk-ing to yourself about someone some-one and what a stupid idiot they are? And, if you were the kind of person who actually ac-tually talked like they were in an old black and white movie where people called each other blaggards, you would say things like "How dare you talk to me like that, sir?'Din your pretend ' conversations. You revise these conversations conver-sations about 16 times a second, always with devastating devas-tating results to their victim: first you kill and maim them completely, then you humiliate humili-ate them publicly and say the most hilariously awful things about their moms and kids and houses and pets. And everyone laughs at them because you're saying say-ing the things they've all thought about saying and haven't had the nerve to. And you wonder why drawing and quartering are no longer fashionable. Am I sounding like a person to whom this might have happened recently, a person just a little too clear about what the process is during one of these fits? You betcha, as our late vice-presidential candidate used to say. Someone done me wrong. And if I felt the need to air it publicly, you'd agree with me 100 percent and you'd be mad too. But what's even worse, they done one of my kids wrong. You've probably never heard the phrase "You can talk about your yella, and you can talk about your roses, but don't you dare talk about my Texas."DIt means, in this case, that you can talk about other people, and you can talk about their kids, but don't you dare talk about my kids. It implies they've been raised wrong and asks the question what was I doing when they were growing up? Didn't I have the sense to see that they were turning turn-ing out badly? Well, let me just say, that if I would have known how to fix them, I would have done it at the time. But I clearly I didn't. I thought they were always going to be the innocent little lit-tle angels they, were at night when I tucked them in and read them the "Bearenstain Bears Go To School," that night before they took the school bus to kindergarten for first time. It's hard not to get defensive, defen-sive, but if you get defensive, defen-sive, people think you don't see how awful your kids are. They think you don't appreciate how deeply and righteously offended they have been by your little wart. But what if you don't think your wart has done 656 II. 800 E. 794-9444 i 1 Large Super Premium Pizza i 3qq1 2 Liter Soda 1 Wacky Stick J . It's usually one part wart, one part immovable object. What if somebody says your little Johnny or June has hit someone, but Johnny says the someone in question ques-tion hit them first? And you believe him. Are bullies fair game? Is Johnny such a jerk that he has to be hit to get along with? Is your boy a sissy? Is your girl a whiner? Just thinking about these questions gives me heartburn. heart-burn. I never knew what to tell my kids when they were in third grade. I always wanted to say; "Hit them back, right where it hurts the most, the little bugger." You know, no, not the right thing to say. Do third graders have other cheeks? Should they turn them? We were evidently all born with "other cheeks"Dor the manufacturer man-ufacturer wouldn't have recommended rec-ommended we turn them. In our particular case, the child involved was not a third grader, and the language lan-guage needed was not playground play-ground language. It was the sweet, kind words my husband gave our son that were the words he needed to say. To ask forgiveness for something he had done inadvertently. To say the magic words: I'm so sorry I hurt your feelings. feel-ings. It was a hard lesson. For both of us. I was mad but I held my tongue. Unfortunately, Unfortu-nately, that was the best I could do. It was the old ball and chain who had a big enough heart to lead us in the right direction. He always takes a spare pair of glasses when he travels trav-els in case of emergency. Recently, he had a mishap with his glasses and had to rely on his spare pair. Since he has a moderately high prescription, he was very glad that he had the spare pair with him. We have often said that patients who wear contacts should have a back up pair of glasses in case of emergency. emer-gency. However, even glasses wearers should have a back up pair, especially espe-cially if the prescription is high enough that you can't function without it. 11 11,1,1,1 """WTOl.i i km r-" y i i. WEST ANIMAL HOSPITAL - " Salt and ice melting chemicals placed across sidewalks side-walks and roads in the winter can cause severe burning burn-ing to your dog's foot pads. Avoid walking your dog through these substances. If your dog comes in contact with these substances, wash his foot pads immediately. Antifreeze is toxic to dogs. Keep garage floors free of antifreeze puddles; tightly close all storage containers con-tainers and place out of reach. If your dog suffers from frostbite, place him in a warm room immediately. Thaw out the frostbitten areas slowly by applying warm moist towels. Change frequently until the area becomes flushed. Severe frostbite can result in damaged paws and ear tips, so it is best to let your veterinarian determine the extent of the damage as soon as possible.
