Calling these mortgages Reverse MortgagesDis almost al-most like calling your new car a "horseless carriage," but we do it anyway. Originally, reverse mortgages mort-gages were just the opposite oppo-site of a regular mortgage. With a regular mortgage, you would go to the bank and borrow $100,000 for your home. You then made payments to the bank and the amount you owed went down. After a while you would have the home paid off. With a reverse mortgage, you would go to the bank after the home was paid off and the bank would begin making payments to you. The whole process is exactly exact-ly opposite or "reverse" to a regular mortgage. . But, similar to a regular mortgage you still own the home. You will be able to pass it on to your heirs. You can still use a reverse re-verse mortgage to get a monthly payment from the bank, but most people don't. Instead, they get a large amount of money at once. They use this money to pay off their current mortgage andor do something some-thing to lower their stress level or increase their enjoyment en-joyment in life. This may be putting cash in the bank for rainy days, using it to make other loan payments, or for vacations, home renovations, etc. The amount you can get depends de-pends on the value of your home and your age. The more valuable your home and the older you are the more you can get. Some people make payments pay-ments to their reverse mortgage. The interest rates are low enough if you make payments to the mortgage, you may possibly pos-sibly even pay the house off faster. You have the added benefit of not being required to make monthly payments when you don't want to. The closing costs for a reverse mortgage are generally gen-erally higher than they are for a regular mortgage.
