The PTA honored Eli (Doug) Panee, who was selected from numerous nominees from nearly every ev-ery school in Utah. Panee's Principal, David Smith, said Panee demands excellence ex-cellence from himself and those around him. "Doug's teaching methods and style are demanding yet student friendly," Smith explains. "He is constantly reinventing reinvent-ing himself to be a better teacher and mentor. Oak Canyon Junior High PTSA President Jackie Pettis said Panee "brings to life the world of science, making learning an exciting excit-ing adventure for every student in his class." She said each of her three children chil-dren have benefited from having had Panee as a teacher. "I have watched as they got excited about what others might think is a boring subject. They've moaned about dissecting owl pellets, but then came home that day and couldn't stop talking about it." Panee motivates students stu-dents through his Science Demo Team (SDT), where 50 students are selected to go around the state making mak-ing science presentations for elementary and junior high schools, science fairs, businesses, symposiums, etc. He motivates students by requiring that they have no tardies or zeroes on assignments in order to participate in fun projects such as the SDT. "This music was borne of joy," group member Brooke Stone says. "Joy in the world around us and the joy in our lives. We know life can be hard. But we also know that if you just stop, and really look around-life is brighter than it seems." Taking the time to stop and look around is exactly ex-actly what brought these women together. All three had come to a place in life where they wanted to be doing something new. As members of the Jenny Phillips Choir, they had become be-come close friends as they performed throughout the United States and around the world. The fact that they already al-ready shared a mutual love for inspirational music and that all three wanted to create something new J i nV t ''QMiv.laic- be on the SDT must have teacher evaluations, self evaluations and a GPA of 3.6. This year, Panee received re-ceived 130 applications for the 50 spots. Despite his busy schedule sched-ule with SDT, Panee makes an effort to attend his students' stu-dents' extracurricular activities ac-tivities such as football, track, concerts and plays. While attending a track meet during extremely cold weather, he took hot chocolate and cider for the students - including those from the opposing schooL . Panee values parents as an important part of every student's educational team. He created a web site where all of the homework is listed and worksheets and class information is available there to download. down-load. Parents are very involved with the SDT activities, ac-tivities, helping behind the scenes, hauling equipment and chaperoning. . Students receive regular feedback on their progress through postcards Panee sends to their homes, complimenting com-plimenting them on their good work in class. In an effort to bring science to life, Panee seeks community communi-ty involvement. The Utah Raptors regularly bring in their "Birds of Prey" demonstration, dem-onstration, which Panee incorporates into his future fu-ture lessons by teaching students about owls and then having them dissect owl pellets to see firsthand what makes them birds of prey. His nominators say Pan ee utilizes firsthand knowledge knowl-edge to teach his students. "He brings the outside for the industry was a perfect per-fect foundation to form a group. "We've each been affected affect-ed in some way by Christ-centered Christ-centered music,"- group member Whitney Permann says. "We've felt the power of it, the spirit of it, and the joy of it. Our hope is that our music will offer others a new way to experience those same feelings. We're excited to see where this 'river' takes us." So far, this "river" has taken them into the studio to record their first album and appears to be headed toward a bright horizon. Already flooded with performance per-formance requests, Mercy River is quickly becoming a highly sought after addition addi-tion to the contemporary-inspirational contemporary-inspirational music scene. Listeners seem drawn to the hope. Brooke, Whitney and third member, Soni Muller currently live in Utah. Each is a wife and a mother. All are enjoying joyful lives.
