Grant Street! Hmm! They had an ancestor ances-tor who lived on Grant Street and they wanted to know if the house was still standing. Not being from this town, I wondered and I started to do some research in the Springville Historical Histori-cal Society files regarding street names in Springville. I located a Sanborn-Perris Map, printed in 1890. Population Popu-lation of Springville at that time was 3000 people. The street names on the map are different than those known today. Such as 400 South or 200 East, etc. The street names were: Chase, Wood, Johnson, Huntington, Roylance, Starr, Pond, Potter, Mill, Haymond, Fort and Thora This map did not have a Grant Street name, but it did come about at a later lat-er date, when the Grant School was built after the turn of the century, which is now known as 400 East. The school was name after President Grant, as were the Jefferson, the Washington, Wash-ington, and the Lincoln schools. This map also provided a wealth of information regarding the times of Springville in 1890. There was no electricity, lighting was provided by oil (coal oil), machinery was pow FT? There were two bridges located on Centre Street just east of Main Street, about half way through the block, one over Hobble Creek and another over Main Street located almost to Johnson Street, or the north end of the block, which was the mill race. I found the Rio Grande Western Railroad ran through the middle of town right down Main Street, cutting to the west at the junction of Main Street and Centre Street (as spelled on the map), and then it intercepted inter-cepted Johnson Street (now 100 North) and Mill Street (200 West) ran through the block between Johnson John-son Street (100 North) and Wood (200 North) crossing cross-ing over Pond Street (300 West) and continued on a north-westerly direction out of Springville. The map shows where dwellings or homes and barns were located, granaries, grana-ries, outbuildings, corrals, Crandair Hotel, Woolen Mills, Planing Mill, LDS coupons on service work! Radiators 'Alternators Meeting House (south of Centre Street and on the east side of Main Street), the Old White Meeting House where fire station is now, Opera House (Main Street between Roylance and Huntington Streets on the east side), blacksmith shops, Presbyterian Church located on Main between Centre and Johnson Street, and the most important building of all, the City Hall located in the middle of the block on the west side of Main Street, with Huntington Hunting-ton Street on the south (the streets the planning fathers want to close for new city offices), Potter Street on the west and Centre street on the north. This ground or acreage was to be kept in perpetuity perpetu-ity for the city hall as stated by Bishop Aaron Johnson, the first pioneer leader, as he gave this property to the town of Springville, according ac-cording to one spokesman. Early records are being researched that would pertain per-tain to this matter. This Sanborn map of 1890, along with many others, oth-ers, are available for the public to use in their research. re-search. All available at the Springville Historical Society. Soci-ety.
