"We believe this is the largest advance ever paid by a Utah book publisher," said Lyle Mortimer, CEO. "David has been a prolific author for us, his titles usually usu-ally reaching the 50,000 mark, making this an easy decision for us." In the past it has been rare for LDS and Utah publishers to pay advances, Mortimer said, but his company intends in-tends to set a new trend for the authors and titles that warrant such payments. Cedar Fort recently paid a similar advance to two-time New York Times best-selling fiction author Steve Al-ten Al-ten for an adventure thriller that focuses on political and economic events that parallel par-allel scriptural prophecies about the last days. This work, "The Shell Game," will be released near the end of the year. Ridges, a retired instructor instruc-tor for the LDS Church Educational Edu-cational System (CES), has published 21 books with Cedar Ce-dar Fort, including the best-selling best-selling Made Easier guides for gospel doctrine study. "Mormon Beliefs and Doctrines Doc-trines Made Easier," Ridges' highly anticipated book, is an alphabetized reference guide to Mormon doctrine for members and non-members. A special Springville High School A Cappella Choir reunion will be held Saturday, Sept. 15, at 2:30 p.m. in the school choir room. Light refreshments and singing will be for all A Cappella students of Glenn A. Montague, who taught at the school from 1951 through 1963. , Mongague organized the Springville High choir in 1951. He was known as the authority on high school choral music, and he served as adjudicator and clinician for various music groups in Utah and Idaho. After leaving SHS, Montague Mon-tague went to teach at Ernest Er-nest Righetti High School in California from 1963 to 1966. He then taught at Allan Al-lan Hancock College from 1965 to 1990 and directed the Allan Hancock Concert Chorale from 1987 to 1994, the Glenn Montague Carolers Carol-ers from 1995 to 2001, was at the Pacific Conservatory Conservato-ry of the Performing Arts from 1965 to 1977, and was the musical director of the Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra from 1968 to 1972. Montague received both his bachelor and master of arts degrees from Brigham Young University before coming to SHS. While at BYU he studied conducting under Newell B. Weight and Dr.-John R. Halliday. He was the assistant director direc-tor of the BYU A Cappella choir during the first two years that the choir was organized. He also studied conducting with Dr. Olaf Christiansen of the famed St. Olaf Choir. Montague is best remembered remem-bered by hundreds of SHS students for his dedication to teaching, his demands toward fine artistic accomplishment, accom-plishment, and for his consuming con-suming desire to help his students realize their full ""-"- '- 11 ,,"-u 1 rJ I l a m V jWL Glenn A. The team will be playing at the All-Military All-Military tournament Sept 1 7-20 at Hill Air Force Base. They will be competing against the Navy, Marines and Air Force. Captain Turner is the daughter of Claudia Turner and Jon Turner, both of Springville. She is the granddaughter of the late Wes and Rena Boyle and Glen and Lucille Turner. She is stationed in Heidelberg, Germany, having recently returned from an assignment in Afghanistan with ISAF (NATO) Debbie Balzotti Our social life this month has been a whirlwind of wedding receptions. We have traveled to various exotic Utah locations from the Deveraux Mansion in Salt Lake to the Brown's backyard in Payson. For the $25 wedding gift entrance en-trance fee we have enjoyed en-joyed artistic cake, architectural archi-tectural mints, measured mixed nuts and thirst quenching lemon water. I do struggle sometimes with lemon water since it is like bobbing for water around the lemon slices in my small plastic cup. These lovely evenings bring to mind "Tending Roses" by Lisa Wingate. (Weddings roses, it's a bit obtuse but you get it right?) Since we have been so busy with weddings wed-dings I didn't have time to read a book this week so this is a past favorite from book club. The young mother, Kate Bowman, moves from Chicago Chi-cago to her grandmother's farm in Missouri. Kate has been chosen by her family to convince Grandma Rose that she needs to leave the farm and move into a nursing home. If you have an elderly grandparent you empathize with both women as they struggle with financial problems, marital tension, motherhood, mother-hood, sibling rivalry and the stress and worry of aging. As Grandma Rose shares her journal with her granddaughter, Kate learns that the things of real value are love, forgiveness, for-giveness, faith, friendship friend-ship and family. Some of her advice stays with the reader: "The same road always leads to the same place. Get on a different road to end up in a different differ-ent place." Applying this simple wisdom in our family interactions in-teractions would surely improve our relationships. This is a sentimental read, but beautifully written. writ-ten. I found it inspirational without being overbear ing. It is about real choices being made by real people. peo-ple. It is sweet and funny - but like all good wedding- receptions it is not too sweet.
