Show 12 Governor Huntsman asks for a statewide ban on personal Governor Jon Huntsman signed an emergency declaration declara-tion Tuesday, in part, asking local government officials to ban personal fireworks in their jurisdictions because of wildland fire dangers. Fire restrictions, including fireworks, fire-works, have already been established statewide on all state, federal and unincorporated unincorpo-rated lands. "This week marks the beginning be-ginning of this year's fire season, and with our State already coping with unprecedented unprec-edented loss of life and property prop-erty due to record wildfires, extraordinary measures are called for," Governor Gov-ernor Huntsman said. "We must work together to protect life and property in these unusual circumstances, circum-stances, which is why I am calling call-ing on all municipalities munici-palities to ban the personal use of fireworks in their jurisdiction." While the major wildfires Utah has experienced thus far are under containment, con-tainment, several new fires have recently re-cently been started start-ed by lighting, causing power outages and home evacuations. "Through this emergency declaration, I am asking local leaders to join me in taking a step beyond those guidelines already put in place at the federal and state levels," Governor Gov-ernor Huntsman said. "There isn't much we can do about the unpredictability of Mother Nature, which is the cause of many fires. There is something, some-thing, however, we all can do about human ignition of fires, which this year has been very costly." SALE ONTINUES! While sometimes some-times caused by lightning, the majority of wildfires are human-caused. The term "wildfire" is applied to any unwanted, unplanned fire burning in forests, shrubs or grass. There are three classifications classifica-tions of wildfires. Surface fire is the most common. It burns along the forest floor and moves slowly, killing or damaging trees and brush. Ground fire is most commonly com-monly started by lightning. This wildfire burns on or below the forest floor from the humus layer to the mineral min-eral soil. Crown fires are the most dangerous. They spread rapidly by wind and jump from treetop to tree-top. tree-top. With high summer temperatures tem-peratures and a shortage of rainfall, it is important to implement wildfire preparation prepara-tion in your family disaster plan. Consider these tips. Prepare a house evacuation evacu-ation plan. Have a family meeting place, instructions for children, provisions for pets and animals, getaway plans and emergency supplies. sup-plies. Make sure children have practiced the stop, drop and roll exercise so they know what to do if their clothing catches on fire. Practice this until it is an instinct. A person's general gen-eral reaction is to run, which only fuels the flames. Prepare the outside of your home by removing remov-ing combustible items near the house and garage. Seal vents and windows, connect con-nect hoses to outside taps and place them near the roof of the house and near ground fuel tanks. Turn off fuel supplies and extinguish pilot lights. Turn on a light in each room to make the house more visible in heavy smoke. Move flammable furniture from windows and doors. Confine pets to one room so they can be easily located if leaving becomes be-comes necessary. Place valuable papers and memorabilia inside the car for quick departure. Back the car into the garage ga-rage and disconnect the automatic au-tomatic door opener. Leave doors and windows closed but unlocked since it may be necessary for firefighters fire-fighters to gain quick entry into your home. If you become trapped at home, stay calm. Avoid canyons, natural chimneys and saddles. If a road is nearby, lie face down along the road cut or in the ditch on the uphill side. Turn the headlights on and ignition off. Get on the floor and cover up with a blanket or coat. Stay in the vehicle until un-til the main fire passes. The engine may stall and not restart. Air currents cur-rents may rock the car, and smoke and sparks may enter en-ter the vehicle. The temperature temper-ature inside will increase, but metal gas tanks and containers rarely explode. Remember that wildfire wild-fire smoke can hurt eyes, irritate respiratory systems sys-tems and worsen certain chronic conditions. When smoke levels are high, outdoor out-door exposure should be limited. Watch for alerts on air quality. Good visibility is 10 miles. When visibility is less than three-quarters of a mile due to smoke, the air quality is hazardous. Having wildfire knowledge knowl-edge is important.
