Show Thursday, January 11, 2007 SPRINGVILLE HERALD 3 Sales tax money up 23 percent in Springville Martin Conover SPRINGVILLE HERALD Springville City is presently pres-ently seeing a 23 increase in-crease in sales tax revenue this fiscal year over last year according to the city finance director, David Allen. Al-len. The information was presented at the last regular regu-lar city council meeting. Allen said that the increases in-creases are due to several reasons, the biggest perhaps per-haps is the state over all is doing so well economically and showing a large increase in-crease in sales tax revenue state wide. However, Allen said that the city overall is showing increases in sales which is also helping to boost the revenue, and he also noted that the city's population growth, which the state is recognizing, helps in the city's increasing revenue from the sales tax. In round figures the city has collected over $1.68 Pandemic influenza drill will give free flu shots As part of a emergency preparedness drill, the Utah County Health Department (UCHD) will be distributing distribut-ing free flu shots from four mass vaccination sites on Wednesday, Jan. 17. "The purpose of this exercise is two-fold," said Dr. Joseph Miner, UCHD director. "First, we want to simulate a mass vaccination vac-cination clinic like we might hold in the case of a pandemic outbreak or a bio-terrorist attack. Public health may be called upon to vaccination a great " number of people as quickly quick-ly as possible, and drilling for such an event helps us to build on strengths and identify weaknesses in our emergency preparedness efforts." "Second, as everyone has heard, we have a lot of flu vaccine we want to get out to the public," said Dr. Miner. "With the delays in shipments of vaccine this year, many people haven't gotten their flu shots yet. We hope by providing them in multiple locations in the community, people, will come out to be vaccinated." vacci-nated." "We also know the word 'free' has a tendency to get people's attention," said Dr. Miner. The mass vaccination vaccina-tion clinics will be held on January 17th from 2 to 6 p.m. Flu shots will be ad Check the box Donate to a family in need this winter. Cabins are available begin million as of the end of November as compared to $1.36 million last year at this time. This accounts for the 23 increase in tax revenue. . Allen said that the money which the city has received is always two months behind because it takes a month for the state to collect the money and another month to distribute distrib-ute the money to the various vari-ous governmental entities in the state. In other words, the money mon-ey received in December is for sales in September. This means that the sales tax for December, the biggest big-gest sales month of the year, will be received the first part of March. Allen said that the city is always conservative in their projections for sales tax and this year anticipated anticipat-ed only a 3 growth. This means that the city's present pres-ent budget will at one point ministered on a first come basis at the following locations: loca-tions: Utah County Health and Justice Building: 151 S. Main Street, Spanish Fork Influenza typically effects ef-fects twenty percent of the population each year, with more than 200,000 people needing to be hospitalized. Flu accounts for around 36,000 deaths annually. "Many people think that getting a flu shot after af-ter Thanksgiving isn't useful, but that isn't the case" continues Dr. Miner. "The month of February statistically has highest number of flu outbreaks annually. Getting the flu shot at least two weeks before exposure will most likely give you protection from getting the flu." Dr. Miner also said that we naven t seen a peak in our flu cases yet this season. "While flu is definitely in the area, we haven't seen a great number of cases yet," he said. "We have been f ortu ning at $1,530. Due to accommodation ac-commodation restrictions on the boat, there are a limited number of spaces available.
