Show 18 SPRINGVILLE HERALD Thursday, September 14, 2006 Sixth Gear: 2007 Jeep Compass Daniel Souza STAFF WRITER It all started because of war. Or I should say, the end of it, when Willys brought its four-wheel drive wonder into the civilian territory with its Jeep CJ-2A versioa It included: a side-mounted spare tire, powered windshield wind-shield wipers, rear view mirror, mir-ror, tailgate (can you imagine imag-ine a consumer car without one today), chrome trim, bigger big-ger headlights, side mounted gasoline tube, etc. It also offered of-fered a plethora of colors. It became an icon that has endured en-dured decades. Over the years, the Willys-Overland company was taken in by other companies-more specifically, the Daimler-Chrysler group. And now as the Jeep group-well, group-well, it's been the Jeep group for the last 20-plus years; this is not a history lesson, but a car column-it engages in another type of war: to win the love of urban dwellers and college students with a new vehicle, the all-new 2007 Jeep Compass. Based on the Jeep Compass Com-pass concept first introduced at the 2005 International Motor Mo-tor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, the 2007 Jeep Compass is an all-new product that brings together the packaging and functionality of an SUV with the perks and price of a compact com-pact car or small pickup. The Compass is the Jeep brand's first front-wheel-drive-based product with an independent suspension. But don't panic quite yet, the Compass will come available also as a four-wheel drive, giving the vehicle the off-road off-road versatility that made the brand iconic;: Jeep's newest vehicle features a standard 172-horsepower 172-horsepower 2.4-liter with dual Variable Valve Timing (VVT) on both intake and exhaust camshafts, which-according which-according to Jeep-helps optimize opti-mize the torque curve at all speeds. This engine produces produc-es more power, better fuel economy and smoother, quieter qui-eter operation than engines without dual WT. If you have owned a bigger-sized engine Jeep, don't expect the Compass to react re-act it the same way. As you drive it around town, you can feel your gas pedal is commanding a four-cylinder engine, but it rides smooth, which is just right for everyday every-day driving. . Jeep's battle is two-fold: To win consumers that perhaps per-haps hadn't thought about the Jeepbrand and to gain sympathy sympa-thy from buyers in the compact SUV segment-which is expected to grow ' considerably in the next decade. With competitors like the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V (just to name a few) Jeep's pursuit will not be effortless. As part of the strategy, the American brand will rely on its 4x4 reputation The Compass' available active, ac-tive, full-time 4x4 system is recommended for daily use, including driving in snow and rain. The four-jvheel-drive 'Lock' mode is recommended recom-mended for deep snow, deep sand and other low-traction surfaces. . Both the standard full-time and 'Lock' modes include standard safety features including: Brake Traction Control, driver-controlled three-mode Electronic Stability Sta-bility Program (ESP), Brake Assist, Electronic Roll Mitigation Miti-gation and anti-lock brakes with rough-road detection. Compass' standard four-wheel four-wheel anti-lock brakes provide pro-vide an good 60-0 mph dry pavement stopping distance of 125 ft. Other standard equipment includes: standard side-curtain air bags, ESP, traction control, ABS, a fold-flat vinyl load floor, AMFM CD radio with an auxiliary audio input jack, cloth seats, 12-volt power pow-er outlet, manual windows, locks, and foldaway mirrors,' silver interior bezels and door arm rests, tilt steering wheel, dome and cargo lights, floor mats and a center console sliding armrest that moves forward 3 inches to accommodate accom-modate shorter drivers. The armrest lid features a unique flip pocket for storing a cell phone or an MP3 player. Estimated consumption on the Compass is 26 mpg city30 mpg hwy for its 4x2 manual transmission engine and 24 mpg city27 mpg hwy for the automatic transmission trans-mission versioa For 4x4 the Compass stays around 25 mpg city29 mpr hwy with a manual tranny and 23 mpg city26 mpg hwy with an automatic. au-tomatic. Both the Jeep Compass and the Jeep Compass Limited Lim-ited models became available in U.S. dealerships and global volume markets in the third quarter of 2006.
