' V" m. : . ! fill Miss Deaf Utah 2005-2007, 2005-2007, Shawnelle Hardman, will compete in the Miss Deaf American Pageant in Palm Springs, California, in July. Shawnelle is the daughter of Eric Hardman of Springville and Tamra Jeppson of St. George. Her proud grandparents are Jean and Kelly Hardman of Springville and Ernie and Naomi Milner of Provo. The Miss Deaf America Pageant (MDAP) offers young women between the ages of 18 and 28 an opportunity oppor-tunity to develop self-confidence as they compete to become a goodwill ambassador ambas-sador and spokeswoman of the National Association of Deaf (NAD). The goal is to encourage and foster future leaders and is part of the youth programs of the NAD. The MDAP takes place during biennial NAD conferences. The nain objective of the Miss Deaf America Talent Pageant is "...a new concept con-cept to help us elevate the image and self -concept of deaf ladies throughout the United States. This is not an ordinary contest. ..beauty, poise, gracefulness are desirable de-sirable qualities, but the biggest big-gest point is one's cultural talent performance." Since 1972, the pageant pag-eant has undergone many changes. In 1976, the word "talent" was removed and it simply became known as the Miss Deaf America Pageant, following closely the structure of the Miss America Pageant. Before reaching national level competition, participants compete at the local and state level, thus enabling a large number of women an opportunity to test their public-speaking and stage presence, poise, and grace "under fire," and their abil ity to "think on their feet." Talent is no longer "the only thing;" the women are judged across a broad spectrum spec-trum of categories including includ-ing community service, academics, current events, knowledge of deaf culture and more. At the 1998, for the first time, the contestants were required to make a three-minute three-minute presentation. This presentation then becomes the Miss Deaf America Platform. Plat-form. Erin Casler, the current cur-rent Miss Deaf America, will relinquish her title after serving for two years. The National Association of the Deaf, established in 1880, is the largest constituency constitu-ency organization safeguarding safe-guarding the accessibility and civil rights of 28 million deaf and hard of hearing Americans in education, employment, health care and telecommunications. A private, non-profit organization, or-ganization, the NAD is a dynamic federation of 51 state association affiliates including the District of Columbia, Co-lumbia, organizational affiliates, affil-iates, and direct members. Primary areas of focus include grassroots advocacy advo-cacy and empowerment, captioned media, certification certifi-cation of American Sign Language and deaf Studies Stud-ies professionals; deaf -related information and publications, pub-lications, legal assistance, policy development and research, re-search, public awareness, sign language interpreter certification, and youth leadership development. In addition to the MDAP, the NAD has three other youth-related youth-related programs: the NAD Youth Leadership Camp, the Junior NAD and the Collegiate NAD. On a local level, Miss Deaf Utah has a wonderful wonder-ful opportunity to be a role model in Utah. She is able to express her talent and portray her belief as a young intelligent woman of tomorrow. It's a fun way to get to know other lovely, talented young ladies as well as learn valuable skills in presentation, poise and building a positive image. Miss Deaf Utah is a nonprofit non-profit event that is hosted, organized, executed and produced by the Utah Association Asso-ciation for Deaf members working on a volunteer basis.
