Based on the circumstances, circum-stances, his future looked bleak, but Richmond is a conqueror. con-queror. Since moving to Springville, he has started an extremely successful curbing business to support himself. And with the help of insightful and encouraging en-couraging teachers, he has been motivated enough to successfully complete his last two years of high school courses as well as make up .for the first two years. This May, Dillon will be the first from his family to graduate gradu-ate from high school. "I've always wanted to graduate," he said. "Next thing you know it's here. I'm graduating." But it hasn't been an easy road. If you look at his transcripts, tran-scripts, nearly all his classes from ninth and tenth grade are F's. His explanation expla-nation was that his former school wasn't strict on attendance. atten-dance. He had a lot of older friends, and he complied with their invitations to sluff class. Consequently, when at the age of 16 he decided to move, he came to Springville High with few credits. "Dr. John Webb, a former vice principal at SHS, admitted admit-ted him under contract that he would attend and not only earn credit in his classes, but make up the credit he was deficit," said Don Liddiard, Dillon's Dil-lon's counselor. "Dillon is successfully suc-cessfully fulfilling that contract." con-tract." He currently has 23 credits, having earned 19 in the last two years and is working hard to complete the last three credits needed for graduation. Faculty members at SHS have worked closely with Dillon Dil-lon to keep him on track and to make graduation possible. He is part of the resource program pro-gram that allows him to make up classes by completing various vari-ous packets, much like independent inde-pendent study. "To anyone else it would have been very discouraging to make up two years of school, but he's done it with almost al-most no complaints," said Barbara Bar-bara Campbell, an English resource re-source teacher at SHS. "He's very hard working-he doesnt waste time." Along with his regular classes and resource make-up packets, he will also be earning earn-ing credit for his business. Cindy Johnston, the resource director at SHS, recently set up an IEP for Dillon where he will attend school on A days and work on B days. His work will be like an internship, intern-ship, for which he will receive credit. ! v y i if . - -M r j Students donate to Blood Drive Jordan Jacobsen SHS STAFF WRITER SHS had a blood drive this past wek sponsored by HOSA and Mountain Star Blood Services. Students, age 17 and older, old-er, were eligible to donate with parental permission. Students have been given the opportunity to donate twice this year and both drives have been highly successful. Advertising class is new at SHS Leslie Stapel SHS STAFF WRITER This year there is something some-thing new at Springville High School. Mrs. Lori Ja-cobson Ja-cobson is teaching an advertising ad-vertising class. Students in this class learn the fundamentals funda-mentals about starting and maintaining a business. They learn what elements go into a good brand name, and what types of advertising are the best and mst productive. Jessica Johnson is a junior ju-nior in the class and she says, "I love Advertising. I learned so much in this class that I didn't know before be-fore I took the class. There is so much information that Mrs. Jacobson tells us that is going to prepare us for the real business world and what we will encounter en-counter when we get into it." This is a great class and hopefully it will be around for many more years!
