Ladies Soccer and Coach Swanson kept only his biggest varsity lineup on the field. They were exhausted and leaking in the midfield. Another factor led to difficulty. Hilkrest's field is an odd shape. It is relatively rela-tively short in length but nearly as wide as it is long. Through-balls Through-balls from the back line seemed to skip to the keeper before Springville could organize around them. At that point a savvy coaching move shored up the line and changed the nature of the attack. Coach Swanson signaled the girls to shift back to their familiar 4-4-2. That moved stopped the bleeding through the midfield and enhanced short passing opportunities in place of through-balls. In the 66th minute, Sydney Hamilton feathered a ball to Crosby Joyner who was 1-v-l on the right side from about 30 yards out. That situation seems to suit Joyner perfectly. With a bit of open space and Httle traffic traf-fic she has a keen sense of how to play head up and dance the ball. She beat the defender with pace and waited for the keeper to attack. The keeper came off her line and Joyner made a nifty fake and crossover that tangled the keeper in her own feet She went to ground and Joyner nearly walked the ball in from 15 yards out. Springville, 3-2. In the 69th minute, Hillcrest had a corner kick and again an unmarked striker netted the equalizer. It looked like the exhausted Devils would have to hold on for a draw. However, in the 80th minute, Joyner received a short pass on the right side mom 30 yards out. She beat the defender on pace, waited for the attack, crossed over, tangled the keeper who again went to ground while Joyner nearly walked the ball in for the game winner. Final score 4-3, Springville. The Hillcrest game was a gamble that the coaching staff was willing to take. To really test the girls, they preferred the risk of a loss to a big-time school over a relatively sure win over Spanish Fork. It was hard going in the second half. Springville only managed 4 shots on goal but scored on 3 of them. The short field was disorienting. The temperature was in the mid 9ffs. The opponent was very physical and accustomed to winning on their home pitch. It was a combination of good coaching that adapted to the conditions and intestinal fortitude forti-tude on the girls' part that led to a very satisfying win. With Provo's weird loss to Waterford, The Lady Red Devils were undefeated atop the table and 7 points clear of their northern rival in Region 7. Next up are all 4-A sides beginning at Provo on September 1. It all starts over today at 4:00. The team should be back to full strength with Swanson and Fischer healed up. Everyone should be rested and ready to go. It will be an exciting conference confer-ence season leading up to the state tournament.
