Show 1 10 SPRINGVILLE HERALD Thursday, September 1, 2005 I Good coaching plus On August 23rd, the Lady Red Devils took on the Pleasant Grove Vikings. Except for the Jordan game, the Devils' 4-3-3 offense has scored first and early in every game. The Pleasant Grove match was true to form In the 13th minute Kaylyn Swanson netted a shot from 20 yards out but it was disallowed dis-allowed on an offside call. In the 18th minute, Sydney Hamilton , put a ball into space from mid-field mid-field out to the left touchline. Rachel Fischer broke on the ball and beat the defender by a step at about 12 yards out Fischer left-footed a square from the touchline to Crosby Joyner at the penalty spot. Joyner controlled con-trolled the pass, dribble once and calmly slotted the ball home. 1-nil Springville. One minute later the Vikings : had a free kick and scored when ' an unmarked striker one- touched a bending ball into the far-post net Thus far, all of the goals that the Devils had con-) con-) ceded had come off set pieces, i While the back line is solid in the run of play, there seems to be some ball-watching going on when defending against set . pieces. Unmarked strikers have ' been getting through after stop-; stop-; pages. The score was level, 1-1, after 19 minutes. In this case, the Vikings were ball-watching because Karissa Henage was unmarked on the follow and she zinged a perfect half-volley from 12 yards out Advantage to Springville, 2-1, 2-1, at the end of the first period. Two minutes after the restart, Henage and Joyner hooked up on a series of wall passes down the middle that diced the PG defense. Joyner took the last diagonal ball from Henage and slotted the ball near post to bring the score-line to 3-1. Springville dominated possession throughout the rest of the second period. There were several breakaways that were on-frame but stopped by good goalkeeping. It was an exciting match and the Devils nearly ran away with it. Final score: 3-1, Springville. The ladies remained undefeated unde-feated atop the table in Region 7 with 13 points on five games. It was very encouraging to check the goal differential across the 21 4-A teams in the state. At the top of the list Highland had an average 3.40 goals-for and 0.60 goals- against for a differential Springville qO6 TODAY 20.00 OFF ASTERCRAFT T 1Kb ; EMMISSIONS BALANCE - & INSPECTIONS All 4 Tires Passenger LIGHT TRUCKS only. Second on the list was Springville with an average 3.80 goals-for and 1.20 goals-against goals-against for a differential of 2.60. This was significantly better than the goal differential that Springville ran on last year, tis good evidence that Coach Swanson's 4-3-3 is meeting its objective. Granted, the differential differen-tial was partially inflated by games against two 3-A sides in preseason play, but so was every other 4-A team's differential. differen-tial. At this point Springville had played against three 5-A sides and was still producing goals more prolifically than last year. Nevertheless, we observe that the team is still not completely com-pletely converted to the 4-3-3. Some of the girls have never played anything other than 4-4-2. There is sometimes a tendency tenden-cy to bring the ball to the middle too early, to miss sending balls into space on the wing, to take too many touches before crossing, cross-ing, or to ignore the third attacker attack-er on the far side. However, the ladies are steadily overcoming tendencies borne of years of playing a different formation. It is not an easy thing that Coach Swanson is asking them to do. It is akin to asking a wishbone Pacific CREDIT 96 E. Center Springville 489-3603 SHARE CERTIFICATE Will renew at posted rate at maturity. It changes the way the girls have to look at the field, move their feet and read the defense. A coach chooses an attack formation forma-tion based on the available personnel per-sonnel and the 4-3-3 does fit these ladies. The speed of the front line and the solid back line make it sing. It just takes time, but the goal differential seems to indicate that it is working. A scheduling mix-up left the Devils unable to play Spanish Fork on the 25th but opened the opportunity to tilt against Hillcrest on the 26th. Hillcrest was picked second behind Alta, the best 5-A team in the state. It was a good opportunity to test the Devils against a top-notch big school. Kaylyn Swanson and Rachel Fischer went down with minor ankle sprains the night before the game. Rather than risk further injury, Kellie Tobler and Natalie Young were brought up from JV to fill in. The Devils came out in the first period and dominated immediately. In about the tenth minute Springville had a corner kick. The ball came in high and was headed to Brit Siddoway who nailed the shot to start the scoring. Following Horizon UNION " ' --www W . Following precedent, an unmarked striker slipped in at the far post and volleyed the ball in for the equalizer. The score was 1-1 at the break. The tone of the game changed immediately at the restart. Fired up by their success suc-cess at the end of the first period, peri-od, Hillcrest came out and was dominant. Hannah Silvey was busy and often diving to save excellent shots. In the 49th minute, Hillcrest scored a goal by working the ball fiom the wing to two players in the box. It was the first goal conceded by the Devils in the run of play this season. The score was 2-1, Hillcrest. In the 60th minute, the Red Devils pressed deep into the attack with good build up.
