Alex Booth STAFF WRITER Last Wednesday, audience members got a sneak peek at what the future holds for the SHS Orchestra. The SHS Chamber Orchestra held one of their regular concerts the Springville Art Museum Audience Audi-ence members were treated to a wide variety of styles of music. mu-sic. To start the night off, the Chamber Orchestra performed per-formed Ralph Vaughan Williams' "English Folk Suite." These songs were based on old folk tunes of Williams' country. coun-try. These toe-tapping tunes are the kind you hum as you leave at the end of the concert. Holding the center of the night's performance was Ar-cangello Ar-cangello Corelli's "Concerto Grosso in G minor, op. 6 no. 8." The movements of this piece use soloists in combination with the rest of the orchestra to create a variation in the volume. vol-ume. When it was written, instruments in-struments had not yet reached the structural design of modern mod-ern instruments and thus could not create the varying volumes vol-umes that today's instruments can. Thus composers used the number of musicians playing in order to vary the volume. In between these larger movements, and in commemoration commemo-ration of Mozart's birthday (last Thursday), . Mozart s "Sonata in A Major, K. 331" and "Concerto in Eb Major, K. 447," except with a twist. The sonata in A had its melody performed per-formed on the marimbas by soloist Lindsay George. The concerto in Eb, which is a horn concerto, was performed per-formed by soloist Matt Swan ... on his tuba It was a delightful experience experi-ence which lit up the faces of audience members as they heard and saw this incredible musical display. To end the night, audience members were treated to two movements from Dvorak's Slavonic Dances including "No. 4: Tempo Di minuetto, which is to be played by SHS orchestra in Reno Nevada later lat-er this month. The chamber orchestra or-chestra is the core and foundation founda-tion of the group competing in Reno. The lucky audience, therefore, had a sneak peek at what the judges will be hearing. SHS News Staff for 20052006 DECA regional competition Loki Blatnick STAFF WRITER DECA is an association of highly motivated students who study and compete in marketing related events. "DECA members compete in a variety of areas, and are provided with many opportunities oppor-tunities to learn how to 'think on their feet,'" Said Mrs. Jacobson, the DECA advisor ad-visor and marketing teacher at Springville High. On Friday, Jan. 21, the re- fional competitions were eld on the UVSC campus. The team events began at 8:30 in the morning, and included in-cluded financial services management, hospitality services ser-vices marketing, and sports and entertainment marketing. market-ing. The competition also involved in-volved many individual events such as marketing management, retail merchandising, mer-chandising, apparel and accessories ac-cessories marketing, quick-serve quick-serve restaurant management, manage-ment, and full-serve restaurant restau-rant management. The teams were given a case and a mere 20 minutes to brainstorm for their im- Erovisational presentation efore a judge. Another area that students competed in is the Quiz Bowl, which is not only a test of knowledge about marketing terms and concepts, but also a test of speed. Two teams of four members mem-bers each are given a buzzer and whoever is able to buzz in with the correct answer first wins that point. Finally, each student competing in any of the events above was required to take a written test on marketing concepts. Springville High was represented rep-resented by a smart and motivated mo-tivated group of students from all grade levels. The competitors included Brady Munns, John VanWagoner, Nelson Villegas, Katelyn Hall, Easton Folster, Ryan Bernal, Loki Blatnick, Tyson Bird, Alyssa Sperry, Lindsey Moore, Sadie Jo Versluys, Carter Rasmussen and Brian Peterson. They were rewarded reward-ed for their outstanding performances per-formances by receiving two first-place awards, two second-place awards, and one third-place award. All of the participants in this regional competition will be moving on to the State competition in Provo, which will be held on March 1 and 2. Those who move on will attend Nationals in Anaheim (Disneyland) in April. Good luck DECA team!
