Jill Fellow STAFF WRITER When their son Sam reached junior high school and 75 pounds, Christine and Roger Durst had to stop taking him on bike trips. "He got too big for a jogger or a kid's bike trailer," said Christine Chris-tine Durst of Springville. "There just was not really a way to make it work even though we really love to be outdoors." In a two-year effort to get the Durst family back on the trails, a team of students at Brigham Young University got together to perfect a combination adult jogger and fold up bike trailer for now 20-year-old Sam Durst, a quadriplegic with cerebral palsy-Durst wore a huge smile on his face Friday afternoon, when two engineering students and their professor delivered the sports chair complete with cougar blue canvas. "Wow, look at his big smile," Roger Durst said while watching watch-ing his son in the new chair. "This enables our entire family to be able to go out for a ride. We couldn't do that before." The family of four has never let their younger son's disabilities disabili-ties get in the way of everyone having a good time. They can snow ski, water ski, repel, bowl and now bike together. "Water skiing is the scariest for me," Christine Durst said. "I don't like to think about him doing do-ing that, but he does. His older brother used to just take him everywhere with him. He is used to getting around." Several years ago, a local bike shop donated a bike trailer to the family with the hope that Christine and Roger could take it apart and use the parts to build a trailer that could fold up, fit Sam and meet their other needs. While they stood in the garage with pieces all over the floor, a BYU student walked by with a better idea. The neighbor decided to build the trailer for the Dursts for his senior project. "He and his group did a really great job," said James Chatterly, a BYU graduate student. "It worked. It was a good concept, but there were some mistakes." Chatterly and a friend took the trailer apart and started over. "This feels a lot smaller and lighter," Christine Durst said while rocking the trailer back and forth in her driveway. The trailer has all-terrain wheels and even a space for a camelback sack for Sam to drink water while he's on the road with his family. Christine Durst said they now have six friends who are waiting wait-ing for them to start manufacturing manufac-turing and selling replicas. She also said she and her family fam-ily feel indebted to BYU for providing pro-viding students and supplies to create the trailer. Chatterly, who graduates with a master's degree in April, said the project made him feel proud to be part of the community. commu-nity. "That is what the program here teaches us to do," he said.
