Caywood In the early 1980's "extended "ex-tended wear" contact lenses made their debut. These lenses were designed and approved by the FDA for continuous wear for 30 days. There was just one problem with the lenses; they just weren't that safe to wear for most people because of frequent fre-quent eye infections and risk of permanent damage to the eye. With the advent of disposable dispos-able lenses in the early 19-90's, 19-90's, there was a second attempt at wearing lenses overnight. This time it was for only seven days. It was thought that using a fresh new pair of lenses weekly would help avoid the risks associated with overnight wear. Better success was attained, but most eye doctors doc-tors felt that it wasn't safe enough. In January of 2002 a new extended wear lens was released. This new lens material transmits about seven times the amount of oxygen compared to previous extended wear lenses and is replaced monthly. Initial studies seem promising that this new lens modality will offer safer overnight wear. Utah presents specific challenges for contact lens wearers. First, due to our altitude there is less oxygen in the air. Secondly, Utah is very dry. These two factors mean that it is very important to follow FDA regulations and clean and replace your lenses as they are designed to be replaced. Various types of lenses have different replacement replace-ment schedules because they are made of different materials. materi-als. Many of the "after hours" calls that I get have to do with patients over wearing their contacts. Over wear can be defined as using the same pair of lenses for longer than the lens were designed. It can also mean wearing the contact lenses too many hours per day. Often, patients pa-tients report sleeping or napping with the lenses in. Particular risk of infection comes from wearing contact lenses while sleeping. Unfortunately, Unfor-tunately, the result of contact lens abuse can result in permanent damage to the eyes. Some of the types of damage from contact lens over wear do not cause sym- YW.RS.PM 1:00 Bishop Steven Uarward 489-6906 SEVENTH WARD-850 S. 400 E. Proper lens care and diligent follow up are essential essen-tial for safety with extended wear lens. Contact lens wearers should have an eye examination yearly. Those who wear lenses over night should also be checked every few months as advised by their doctor.
