Show Page Two - The Springville EDITORIAL CJeuj wing addition almost finished Have you visited the Springville Museum of Art lately? tif you haven't, you should. The work thai has been done on 'the construction of the new wing addition will take your ;breath away. ' It has been along time getting this project accomplished, but the end is now in sight, and thanks go to all those at the 'museum who have worked so hard getting donations and grants to pay for the expansion. t; Some citizens may not realize that none of the funds to 'put this addition onto the museum have come from the city 'of Springville. However, the city does own the building, including the new addition. As for the artworks housed inside the museum, they are not owned by the city. They are owned by the Springville Museum of Art Association. The director of the art museum is a department head in the city. Back to the beautiful new addition. The main floor is almost finished and it is nice! The former patio with the . balcony and tower have been incorporated into an atrium ilhat is now the serving area in the museum and the most interesting room in the building. On the second floor, plastering and painting have been completed along with the hanging of acoustical ceiling tile and track lighting. And floating walls have been painted to color coordinate with the floating walls in the rest of the building. It is beautiful. The main item that needs to be completed is laying the tile on the second floor and in a few small areas on the main floor. Work also needs to be finished in the basement area, kitchen and bookstore. A huge thank you goes to those citizens who worked so hard in the 1930's to build the original building and to all those who had a vision of the art movement in the first place and throughout the years. The $4 million new wing and renovation project would not have been possible without the generous donations of many people both in money and volunteer labor. Work has been done in phases as money has been raised. An additional $150,000 is all that is needed to complete the project. The art museum is beautiful. It is the showplace of our community. It is what we are known for. It is not only a place to see and study art, but it is a building that is used for wedding receptions, banquets, recitals and other events. We encourage everyone to visit the art museum. You will be amazed and proud of what has been done. Thanks Mrs. Burdett! COMMENT PAGE BiejM to leave peaceably Editor: Visitors should accommodate accommo-date Utahns peaceably. I am tired of this state worrying about whether we are offending offend-ing some individual or his culture by the majority religion reli-gion in existence here. Since the ill-advised, ignorant and rude attacks in and on the LDS plaza in Salt Lake City, we have experienced a surge in territorial patriotism by the majority of Utahns. However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining about the possibility that our proud patriotism was offending offend-ing others. I am not against visitors, tourists or the curious curi-ous coming to look us over, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking seek-ing a better life by coming to Utah. Our population is almost entirely comprised of descendants of immigrants who became pioneers to settle in this desert land. However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our state and apparently some born here, need to understand. The idea of Utah being a multi-cultural community has served only to increase our sovereignty and our state identity. Choir iimm success! Editor: SHS Choir Department's celebration of Richard Rod-gers' Rod-gers' 100th birthday was a smashing success. Over 800 people enjoyed dinner and the talents of over 175 students stu-dents as the choir paid tribute to Rodgers in the ninth annual annu-al choir dinner on January 24 arfd"25'.'"1" ' " " ;--- Several outstanding soloists solo-ists and ensembles entertained enter-tained the audience with Richard Rodgers' classics such as "Some Enchanted Evening," "My Funny Valentine," Valen-tine," "Blue Moon," Kansas Big words, short memories by R.K. Speights Ever since the President's State of the Union message, all we are hearing are big words from countries with short memories. Take the Kuwaitis for instance, Every interview you hear with a Kuwaiti citizen it seems that the US is the aggressor. They complain about being occupied by the US. Excuse me, but 11 years ago they were cheering the American military occupation of their country that freed their butts from Saddum WhosCrazy. Short memory. Nelson Mandella accused the US of being warmongers. He taunts the US as being the country that committed one of the most horrendous acts of war, dropping the bombs on Japan. He forgot two things: Japan systemical-ly systemical-ly killed 2390 US citizens, Dec. 7, 1941, when they attacked Pearl Harbor without with-out a declaration of war; and had the bombs not been dropped, the war could have raged on for years. I guess he has a memory lapse about the billions of dollars in aide the US has given his country over the past 50 years and other countries around the world. Short memory. D-Day, June 6, 1944, the allied forces launched an invasion that liberated France, Italy and a host of other European countries from Hitler's Nazi regime. But if you listen to France today, the US is the bad guy picking on poor defenseless countries. Short memory. Even the Britts are murmuring mur-muring US stay home. They need to check the history books because if it wasn't for the US they might be speaking speak-ing German. Yeah, let's stay home. The next attack by the terrorists could be on Buckingham Buck-ingham Palace or Old Big Ben. Short memory. The Arabic nations say As Utahns, we have our own cultures, our own societies soci-eties and our own lifestyles. This culture has been developed devel-oped over 156 years of struggles, strug-gles, trials and victories by thousands of men and women who have sought freedom and especially freedom of religion. We speak many languages because we come from Europe, Eu-rope, Asia, the Islands, South America, South Africa or any other country that chooses choos-es to immigrate legally for religious purposes. Therefore, There-fore, if you wish to become part of our state, learn that we are Christians, Americans and Utahns, and welcome any other peaceable religion to come, stay and rejoice with us. "In God We Trust" is our national motto. We Utahns believe this also, This is not some Christian, right-wing banner to be waved in derision deri-sion of our beliefs or any God-fearing religion. We try to live this motto every day. Christian men and women, on Christian principles and rejoicing in our religion, founded this state, a fact which is abundantly documented. docu-mented. If the God we believe in offends you, then I suggest you consider another area of the solar system as your new City," "Sound of Music," "Nothing Like a Dame," and many other favorites. All five choirs participated participat-ed in song and dance numbers num-bers including a beautifully choreographed "Carousel Waltz." The evening ended with all choir students uniting to sing a show stopping gospel version of "You'll Never Walk Alone." This year's choir dinner was made possible by overwhelming over-whelming support from parents, staff and SHS administration. ad-ministration. Over 75 dedicated dedi-cated parents volunteered to US please protect us from our crazy brothers don't hurt them. Please forgive us for hollering and shouting for joy when one of those crazy brothers kills 1000's of Americans Ame-ricans on 911 but they were our brothers. Again, they too, could be speaking German Ger-man if the US and allied forces had not stopped Rom-mell Rom-mell in the deserts of North Africa. Short memory. Even the good citizens of the US are holding up their "Peace Signs." No War cries are resounding. US the aggressor. ag-gressor. Peace brother, peace. Economics be damned, let's pay six bucks at the pump. Let almost everything we buy escalate in price 500 percent. Who needs their oil. Oh year, forget about our brothers and sisters that were killed on 911. Let the terroristic countries alone. Peace brother, broth-er, peace. Short memory. Afghanistan is already saying, "Yankee Go Home." Well, let's just do that and let their old friends the Taliban Tali-ban given them another taste of the good old days. Short memory. Am I advocating war? No. But I'm a realist. We have two choices: Start kicking kick-ing butts and pulling fangs, one country at a time, or pull all our military forces out of Germany, Korea, Taiwan, the Arabic countries, England, Eng-land, Africa and elsewhere from across the globe. Form a protective border around the good old US with our navy. Line the borders with our troops and let the others go at it. Let them protect their own butts for a change or most likely get their butts kicked. While we are at it, cut the $11.5 billion foreign-aid budget to zero. Now that would be a healthy increase in America's pocketbook. Let's see 11.5 million divid home, because honoring God and His Son is part of our culture. If the way we try to enhance the beauty of this state and capitol city offends you, or you don't like the majority religion of this state, then you should seriously seri-ously consider a move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our cultures cul-tures and have no desire to change, only to improve lawfully, help the poor and needy, serve our country when called upon and live witliin the bounds of the Constitution and Bill of Rights as intended by the Founding Fathers. This is our state, our land and our lifestyle, we share it willingly with anyone in peace. Our First Amendment gives every citizen the right to express his opinion, and we will allow you every opportunity to do so within the bounds of the law. But once you're done complaining, complain-ing, whining and griping about nur state, our plaza, our allegiance to our nation or our way of life, I highly encourage you to take advantage advan-tage of one other great American Ame-rican freedom: THE RIGHT TO LEAVE peaceably. Leo J. Lee Springville serve on 15 committees. These committees were responsible for the complete production of the dinner and show. Hundreds of volunteer hours went into the success of the dinner as parents worked along side with their students. Mrs. Crockett expresses appreciation to' ' the : many parents, community members, mem-bers, faculty, staff and administration ad-ministration for their support of the choir department.
