Show Page Two - The Springville Herald EDITORIAL Protect the Pledge of Allegiance In an effort to protect the Pledge of Allegiance and our national motto, the American Family Association has launched a nationwide petition to support a constitutional amendment. Wepledge.com says it is beginning a drive to secure 10 million signatures at its online petition in support of an amendment protecting the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Motto. The amendment is being sponsored by Congressman Chip Pickering. "The online petition gives easy access to those who support this amendment to express their opinion," said Donald E. Wildmon, chairman of American Family Association. "We expect this to be the most signed petition in history." Individuals can sign the petition by going to Wepledge.com. The proposed legislation would protest the pledge and motto from action like that taken by the Ninth Circuit Court in San Francisco which said the pledge was unsonstututional because it contained the words "under God." The amendment will write the pledge and motto into the Constitution, Constitu-tion, making it impossible for two judges to rule it unconstitutional. The three-man court made the ruling following a suit by an atheist. The proposed amendment reads: "The first article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States shall not be construed to prohibit the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, which shall be, "I pledge allegiance to the Rag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God. indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." "The first article of amendment to the Constitution of the United Stales shall not be construed to prohibit the recitation or use of the national motto, which shall be, Tn God we trust.'" Citizens of Springville and Mapleton are urged to log onto Wepledge.com and express their support of this amendment. If you had to do it over, would you fall in love with yourself your-self again? COMMENT 1AGB twin sipall needed wsdl Editor: Once again it is time to crusade cru-sade for action concerning the lack of turn signals at the intersection inter-section of 4th South and 1750 West in Springville. With solid streams of traffic passing east and west, only to be interrupted by an occasional red light, there comes a challenge to those brave souls who desire to turn south or north. If a video were to be made of the daring, dangerous, wheel screeching and very near accidents, acci-dents, it would turn the hair of the most hardy motorist instantly Masters Editor: When the evil works and source of liberalhumanist philosophies philos-ophies are exposed, there is no length liberals will not go to when maligning and demonizing those who expose them and their source. One thing liberals or Satan can't stand is exposure and the truth. Two Satanic cliches and labels liberals most often useee to distract from the truth are hate and racism or the nefar-iousss nefar-iousss race card to distract from the works of Satan. Liberals call truth hate and the facts or realities of life racism. They are also masters of spinning the truth to confuse or cloud an issue. The following are some of the scriptures I am reminded of when I think of liberals or humanists: "Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter." (Isaiah Grasita rater, Editor: I am writing regarding the land above 970 East once owned by the Cattlemen's Association. It is my understanding you are planning to allow housing above and below the fire road. As you know, we have lost 2,000 acres of wildlife habitat due to fire and we are currently experiencing a water shortage. I cannot comprehend allowing construction when taking into consideration these two major losses. How many residents would be willing to have greater limitations on their water? How much water will be available for emergencies? Are you willing to drive more deer and elk to starvation and loss of shelter? Is this the legacy you wish to leave your grandchildren? grandchil-dren? How often do you walk this mountain counting the living and the dead? Last year you were given photos of deer (18 out of 35) found dead after one severe winter. Have you forgotten them? What about the road kill on Old Springville Road? What about the badly needed scrub oak in the "Spanish Graves" area? Why do you vote to destroy nature rather man vote to create a way to live with and preserve it? I recently watched a documentary documen-tary on community planning vs. urban sprawl. With community planning there are greenbelts, local job opportunities and a variety of stores and recreational activities to keep families living and working locally. On the other hand, urban sprawl just plans new housing areas leading to an increase in commuter traffic with its accompanying accom-panying pollution. It leads to more time away from families for driving to and from work. It is obvious to me which plan most Utah communities are following. In a second documentary on ecology, I learned one American child uses 30 times more of the earth's resources than any other child in the world. I also learned there is one acre of forest land lost every second of every day. Consequendy, multiple species of animals are suffering and disappearing. disap-pearing. Why are we not willing to protect what we cannot create? At the end of the program, the commentator said, "We (as human hu-man beings) do not exist in a vacuum. Our health is contingent upon our environment. Humans seem to think they are separate and superior to nature when, in fact, we are part of a great whole." Perspective is our worst problem, he said; the perspective of humans who refuse to see the gray with fear and cause them to retire to their garages never again to venture out on the street known as west Fourth South. As a casual observer of this possible carnage, the thought occurred to me that someone much wiser than I should have envisioned, at the time of the erection of the signal lights, that turn lights would be most appropriate. appro-priate. But, alas, such was not the case! May I suggest that the Springville Spring-ville City Council or UDOT, or both equally, provide some tidy little crosses to be available to be of deceit and spin 5:20) Calling good evil and evil good is a ploy used by Satan and his disciples. "And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him." (Revelations 12:9) "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against poweres, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." (Ephesians 6:12) The odious and egregious attacks by liberals on those who expose Satan and his works, also reminds me of a talk by Elder M. Russell Ballard at a recent LDS General Conference. He said, "Lucifer is waging a vicious war for the souls of young and old alike and the casualty count is climbing. The world's perspec 9 interrelationship of all life. It has been a continual cycle in Utah. Buy land. Ignore what life that land may be supporting. Kill the wildlife if they return looking for food. Build as many houses as legally possible. Plant acres of grass (which does not support wildlife and which requires re-quires thousands of gallons of water to maintain. Grass also requires gas mowers which increase in-crease pollution as well). This has been the dominant pattern in Utah - no vision, no greenbelts, no respect for life or health, it is a way of making money: ignore it, kill it or cut it down. When friends from other lands or other states visit Utah, they ask me why Utahns continually destroy the beauty God gave them instead of protecting and enhancing it. How can they go to church on Sunday and lay plans for starvation of God's creations on weekdays? My answer is always the same - greed, no vision, no respect for life. I plead with you now to make decisions that leave a legacy of beauty, life and health - not greed, not layers of asphalt and pollution, not dead animals and plant life, not a shortage of water or a depletion of oxygen. Even now the wildlife organizations organi-zations are meeting to plan more killing during hunting season. They were presumably organized to preserve wildlife, not destroy it. But once again, politics and greed prevail and destruction inevitably follows. Where are plans to plant, to create a feeding program, to create a watering program? If the keepers of the money can afford to put in a $6,000 worthless access blockade in the middle of 4th South west of the freeway and then pay more tax dollars to have it be removed, surely money can be found to upgrade the traffic signals to the east of 1-15. Leo J Lee Springville IleefamIee3ol.com tive has been so dramatically altered, that those who choose to adhere to traditional standards of morality are viewed as strange, almost as though they must justify justi-fy their desire to keep the commandments com-mandments of God. But one thing is certain: the commandments have not changed. Let their be no mistake about that. Right is still right. Wrong is wrong, no matter how cleverly cloaked in respectability respect-ability or political correctness." The liberalhumanist view of morality is most often based on selfish lusts of the flesh, worldly pleasures and moral relativism divorced from natural law. As history shows, such morality inevitably results in a moral meltdown, followed by social political anarchy. Human laws cannot ignore the naturalmoral law without reaping the wrath of nature. Art Larson Springville wilffif troughs which could be constructed construct-ed by a wildlife organization? Cannot an interim food program pro-gram be reinstated as it was one severe winter in the late '80s? There must be someone who is creative enough to plan a way to save lives, not destroy them, until land can be restored to them. You, as leaders in this community, com-munity, have the power to restore life by stopping building on badly needed wildlife habitat. There is a song from the '60s (I believe) that asks, "Where have all the flowers gone .... When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn?- I ask that same question now. We cannot blame the weather for the current drought. We can only blame poor planning that led to an overwhelming imbalance of the earth's flora and fauna, water and oxygen. And, yes, we can blame those who didn't protest long enough or loud enough. When the deer and elk come into Springville this winter, will you ignore them, kill them, or strive to help them survive? Your grandchildren and their grandchildren after them will know of your deeds by the barren and empty hills. There will be no praise for their ancestors like the praise we give the pioneers. They will be asking why, why was money their priority instead of life, beauty, health and a balance with nature. Marilyn R.
