Show OBITUARIES Raymond A. Sumner Raymond A. Sumner returned to his Heavenly Father October 20. 2001, at the age of 61. following a massive -stroke and heart attack. He was born July 25. 1940. in Ptainfield. CT to Aime Metivier and Eleonore Letnoine and . was later adopted and sealed to his mother and father Claude I. Sumner. He married Lynette Huff of Springville, Utah, on February 5. 1965. in the Salt Lake IDS Temple. Ray was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Roy 26th Ward. Roy, Utah. He served an LDS mission to French Polynesia (Tahiti). He served in many church callings. Stake High Councils, Bishoprics, Music. Gospel Doctrine, Scouts, Young Men, Sunday School, Activities Activi-ties Chairman and many others. He worked for the International Travel Dept. at Hill Air Force Base for the past 19 years and previously for . Pan American World Airways. His great love for music has touched the lives of many through his beautiful tenor voice--singing with the Denver Opera Co. and numerous church and community choirs along with plays. Ray's love for his Savior and testimony of the gospel was magnified through his love of music. Ray had a great love for his family and friends and was well respected and loved by all. Ray was a loving and wonderful husband, father and grandpa and was a great friend to many. He is survived by his wife, Lynette H. Sumner; Sum-ner; his father, Claude I. (Norine) Sumner (FL); five loving children: Michael T. (Donnette) Sumner, Jennifer (Brett) Curnmings, Heidi Sumner, Sum-ner, Scott L. (Stacie Jo) Sumner and John C. Sumner; grandchildren: Joseph M., Eric M., Emily N., Kirra, Lauren A. and Landon A. Sumner,, Sum-ner,, all of Roy and Hooper, Utah; six brothers broth-ers and two sisters: Wayne A. (Janet) Sumner, Sum-ner, So. Ogden; John C. (Elaine) Sumner, No. Ogden; Joel Sumner, MN; David Sumner, CO; Benet (Delia) Sumner, Sum-ner, NJ; Robert (Sue) Metivier, CT; Claudia (Edward) Gimbel, IN; and Kathrine (Paul) Furan, GA. He was preceded . in death by his mother Raymond A. Sumner Eleonore. father Aime; brothers Glen and Kenneth; Ken-neth; father and mother-in-law Joseph Lynn and Mercy Huff. , Funeral services were held October 24 in Roy. Graveside services were in the Evergreen Cemetery, Ceme-tery, Springville. The family wishes to express thanks to all of those of whom he worked with at H.A.F.-B., H.A.F.-B., his friends, and the employees and staff at McKay Dee Hospital 6th floor rehabilitation unit. Rulon Samuel Western, West-ern, age 91, of Provo, Utah, passed away October Octo-ber 19, 2001 in Provo. He was born September 12, 1910, in Deseret, Utah, to Alma and Nan-, cy Stanworth Western. He married Bonnie Marie Pedersen on June 15, 1937. in Provo.. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She preceded him in death on ' August 16, 1989. Rulon was raised in Hinckley. Utah. He graduated from Millard County Academy, where he was a top student in math, shop and chemistry. chemis-try. He worked with the CCC from 1934-1937, and 1940-1941, until the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Har-bor. He then worked in Fort Wachuka, Arizona, building mess halls and fire stations during wwn. Rulon helped with the construction of Geneva , Steel as a layout fore man. After the completion, comple-tion, he worked in the Open Hearth. He was a member of the local Carpenters Union. He spent., over 40 .yearr. working for Clifford A.' Anderson as a finish carpenter. He was a member of the LDS Church, and served at the Provo Temple as an ordinance ' worker for 22 years. He loved to go fishing with his wife, Bonnie. He was proud of his children and grandchildren. He is survived by two sons and one daughter: . R. Lee (Karen) Western, St. George, Utah; Steven B. Western, Gilbert. , The American Legion has announced its High School Oratorical Ora-torical Contest for the 2001-2002 academic year. The purpose of this contest is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution Constitu-tion of the United States and the part of high school students. Other objectives include the development of leadership qualities, quali-ties, the ability to think and speak clearly, and intelligently and preparation for the acceptance of duties and responsibilities of American citizenship. In addition to the personal development which participation in this contest provides, there are monetary rewards. Scholarship awards are presented to the four finalists at the national level as follows: 1st PIace-$ 18,000; 2nd Place-$16,000;3rdPlace-$14,0-00. The Utah State winner receives re-ceives a scholarship of $1,500 and the following awards will be made at the District Contest: 1st Place-$200, 2nd Place-$100, 3rd Place-$50; 4th Place-$25. Awards will also be made at the Springville High School contest: 1st Place-$50; 2nd Place$25 and 3rd Place-$15. Contest dates are Springville High, Dec. 17, 2001; District, Jan. 31; State, Feb. 16 and National, Na-tional, April 13 and 14.
