Ruff SpringYffle LDS Stake Music Chairman Have you ever been asked to conduct a hymn in church and didn't know how? Have you ever been a choir director but didn't know how to develop a choir, or know just what are die Church standards for Sacrament Meeting? Do you have a music-calling in your ward? Ox would like to have one? 'Then you need to know about this historic Nine-Stake Music Workshop, after which, for the first time, Springville and Map-leton Map-leton stakes will now have a large pool of well-trained music leaders. lead-ers. At least 14 music positions have to be filled in every ward in the nine local stakes. That's more than 60 wards and 84 music positions, with constant changes as people are released or move. Only a handful has ever had any real music training. We will help those dedicated members to do their jobs with increased confidence confi-dence and vastly increased abili- - Organists and pianists who want to improve their skills and learn new ones. - All choir directors and Bishopric members in charge of musk. They will learn the official offi-cial church-wide standards for Sacrament Meeting music, and will also be taught how to build successful choirs. - Anyone with a current music calling. The workshops start promptly at 8 a.m. each Saturday morning, and there will be 12 classes to select from each Saturday. You can attend as many or as few you wish, and there is absolutely no charge. You can refer to the accompanying chart of classes. If we can simply create a new pool of interested people who would feel confident enough to stand in front of a congregation and conduct a hymn, this workshop work-shop will be a success. The LDS Church has always had a reputation for producing fine music, probably because of the Tabernacle Choir, but music at the ward level sometimes falls below hoped-for standards, simply sim-ply because of lack of knowledge of the basics which can be so easily learned. To attend, please tell your Ward and Stake music chairman and that you will be there, or just come at 8 a.m. on Saturday mornings. For further information, informa-tion, you can call Howard Ruffs office at 489-8681 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and ask for Joann. She will give you the appropriate information. Thank you SHS students! A big thank you to the students stu-dents at Springville High School who raised $5,200 for the New York Relief Fund! Maureen Miller's English class spearheaded the fund drive by placing collection jars around the school. The students were generous and this large amount was raised in a week and sent to New York. "This will keep us busy in our little shop for several months," said Valley's partner and wife, Ming Valley. "We are happy that so many people in the former Soviet Bloc love Cash Price's beautiful work." The Valley's would not disclose how much the international interna-tional deal was for, but art dealers, familiar with Cash Price's work, said that the arrangement could involve millions of dollars, judged on previous sales of his work in Eastern Europe. They also said, though, that the works would be considered a "waste of good clay" in this country. The statues are each three feet high and weigh about 150 pounds each, though the weight fluctuates per piece from as little as 50 pounds to as much as 200 pounds. The couple's company, Art to Go, has only been operating for a little over a year, but is one of the most successful companies com-panies in Springvale, next to the mysterious Clandestine Electronics, owned by Hera Ping, daughter of Springvale's leading citizen, Estill Ping. Estill Ping, as every Spring-vale Spring-vale citizen knows, is also the step-mother to Ming Valley, who was missing for more than 26 years. Ming Valley, (then Ming Ping) was taken by her mother to Russia when the girl was five and not heard of again until about 18 months ago, when the now-grown Ming showed up, married Cash Price Valley and established their successful business. A workshop will be held on three upcoming Saturday mornings, morn-ings, Oct. 27, Nov. 3 and Nov. 10, sponsored by nine Springville and Mapleton stakes. The faculty will consist of outstanding Jocal music leaders, many with professional profes-sional musical backgrounds, plus members of the Church General Music Cornmittee, - including BYU faculty members. This is not just for choir leaders, but for everyone who is involved with music or would like to become involved some day in the music of the church. Perhaps the biggest need is for all those people who like to learn how to conduct a hymn but don't know how to even get started. We hope for a good turnout of beginners. They will be treated with respect and taught the basic fundamentals so they can do a better job of conducting music in their wards and stakes if they are called to that assignment. assign-ment. We will also be able to help all those with current music callings. The faculty includes many local inusic luminaries. Let me name a few of them. Louise Payne, has performed with many opera companies and has been teaching voice and lecturing on vocal performance for years. Leila Pomeroy has a BA in music and her Masters Degree in music and organ performance, and accompanies the Utah Lyric Opera Society. Rhyll Croshaw has directed stake and regional choirs. W. Herbert Klopfer has been a member of the Church General Music Committee since 1983. He is an organist, pianist and composer, com-poser, and wrote they hymn, "Heme Can Be A Heaven On Earth." Ryan Murphy has assisted assist-ed and accompanied the BYU Men's Chorus under Mac Wil-berg, Wil-berg, taught music at Meridian School and Snow College, and currently directs the Mapleton Chorale. And many more. Including In-cluding Church General Music Committee Members. So who should attend this workshop? s - Anyone who would like to learn the basics of conducting hymns. - Prospective missionaries who will probably be called upon to direct, a hymn in a small branch somewhere. h-CULTURAL HALL - RELIEF SOCIETY ROOM . fTI-YWROOM SPIrjfieVFLIX eHflfflBEic; of eofflfflEine ence HAL 9 10 WEE c Wednesday, October 31st 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Main Street "Children up to t2 years old (Must Be In Costume) TRICK OR TREAT AT THESE BUSINESSES!
