The Springville Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting the 4th Annual "Commitment to Youth" Conference on Saturday, February Febru-ary 26, 2000 for all Springville Jr. High and High School students. stu-dents. As usual there will be great speakers and activities. Those invited to speak includes Gov. Mike Levitt, Melissa An-dcrson-Palmer-Former Miss Utah, Miss USA Pageant, Wes Ruff-Channel 4 Sportscaster, John Bytheway-Motivational Speaker. Scicma Gali, Jr-BYU Football Player, and Paul BrewerMotivational Brew-erMotivational SpeakerMagician. Speak-erMagician. In addition to this great line up of speakers each student will also receive a t-shirt, lunch and door prizes. The door prizes will include two trips for four to Disneyland, TV, bicycles, snowboard snow-board package and more. We encourage all students to pre-register pre-register for this event at your school from February 1 to 4. The cost of this event is still only $5. Springville man to solo with the Valley Symphony Seven local musicians will join the Utah Valley Symphony as soloists in its annual Young Artists concert Wed., and Thur., Jan. 26 and 27, in the Provo Tabernacle. Conductor Bryce Rytting will give the downbeat at 7:30 each evening. Tickets will be available at the door at $5 each. Soloists are Ramona Jacob, 18, cello; Greg Anderson of Springville, 21, marimba; Angela Dastrup. 12, harp; Kira Kapp, 16, violin; Michael McQuay, 17. piano; Bethany Richards, 9, piano; and Mafile'o Latu, 19, piano. The orchestra alone will perform Rossini's Overture to "William Tell" and Mascagni's "Intermezzo" from "Cavalleria Rusticana." Ramona Jacob will perform the adagio movement of Elgar's Cello Concerto in F. Minor. The daughter of James and LaDawn Jacob, Orcm, she won first place in ASTA and state fair competitions competi-tions in 1999 and soloed with the Utah Symphony in November. She has been principal cellist in school, community and all-state orchestras. She studies with Gaylc Smith at BYU. Percussionist Greg Anderson earned five superior ratings at state solo and ensemble competitions competi-tions 1995-97 and toured with the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps last summer. The son of Clair and Mary Anderson. Springville, Sprin-gville, he is a percussion student at UVSC and BYU. He will perform Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee." Harpist Angela Dastrup will play "Aria in the Classic Style." by Grandjany. The daughter of Max and Claudia Dastrup, Orem. she began her harp studies at age 4 and is a student at Lakeridge Junior High. She won the elementary ele-mentary division in state competition competi-tion in 1997 and the junior division divi-sion in 1999. Kira Kapp is the daughter of Gary and Diane Kapp. She has studied violin with Linda Duncan, Dun-can, Tamara Timson and Barbara Williams, and fiddling with Karl Allrcd. placing second in the state fiddling contest. She also plays clarinet in symphonic band at Provo High, where she is a senior, and performs with the Utah Valley Youth Symphony. Kira will perform "Simchas Torah," from "Baal Shem-Three Classic Pictures of Chassidic Life." by Ernest Bloch. Michael McQuay will perform the first movement of Proko-fieffs Proko-fieffs Piano Concerto No. 1 in D-flat Major. The son of Mard-son Mard-son and Betty McQuay, Orem, he is the music Sterling Scholar for Orem High. He studies piano with Irene Weiss Peery-Fox and has won several competitions. He has studied music at the Conservatoire Conserv-atoire de Musique in Paris and also plays the violin and other instruments. Bethany Richards, the youngest youn-gest soloist this year, is the daughter daug-hter of Ryan and Mary Richards and a third-grade student at Cedar Ce-dar Ridge Elementary in Pleasant Grove. A student of Lori Weiss, she placed first in the Encore Keyboard Competition in 1998 and 1999 and has soloed with the Nachtmusik Chamber Orchestra. She will play the presto movement move-ment from J.S. Bach's Piano Concerto in F Minor. Mafile'o Latu, daughter of Limhai and Vai Latu, is a junior at BYU, majoring in piano performance per-formance under Irene Peery-Fox. She has also studied cello and played cello with the Mt. Timpa-nogos Timpa-nogos Chamber Orchestra. She toured China with Young Pianists International and performed for the Royal Family of Tonga. She will close the concert with a performance of Franz Liszt's "Totentanz." Artists' Guild to meet Jan. 26 The Utah Valley Art Guild's monthly meeting will be Wed., Jan. 26, at 7:30 p.m. at Provo Art and Frame, 200 W. Center ; Street, Provo. January's meeting will be a potluck dinner. The guild will provide meat and all utensils. You are asked to bring your favorite dish to feed at least six people. They will separate into focus groups for discussion. Groups will include oils, acrylics, water-color, water-color, pastels, mixed media, photography and miscellaneous. Come join other artists in your media fot help and ideas for exploring a new medium with others who are working in that field. Remember that paintings are due that evening for the Alpine Art Center Show. The guild will hold this exhibit in Alpine where work by many prominent Utah artists in various media will be presented. The open reception will be held Sat., Jan. 29. from noon until 2 p.m. You will be able to meet many of the artists at that time. A tour of the foundry found-ry will also be available.
