Parkway trail proposed for canyon road A group of Springville citizens citi-zens are concerned about the safety of the many people who jog, walk and bike along the road in Hobble Creek Canyon. They have formed a committee to build a trail from the mouth of the canyon to Kelly's Grove in order to provide a safe, beautiful place where people can enjoy these activities. Safety is the main concern that has been brought up in previous previ-ous meetings. There are narrow places in the road and plenty of curves. The cars seem to pick up speed coming down the canyon and often cut curves and pass or stop where it is not safe. Drivers tend to take their attention away ' from the road while looking at the scenery or wild life. Canyon residents fear that it is only a matter of time before a jogger or biker along side the road is seriously seri-ously injured or killed. The immediate goal of the 'committeeS" 'which is ' working under the direction of both Springville Spr-ingville City and Utah County, is to build a trail from the mouth of Hobble Creek Canyon to Kelly's' Furniture company opens in Mapleton New to the SpringvilleMap-leton SpringvilleMap-leton area is Westwood Furniture Company located at 1410 W. 1600 North, Mapleton, formerly Ralph's Automotive. Future goals include continuing the trail up the right fork of the canyon and building a park east of the diversion dam. The trail, which will be named the Hobble Creek Parkway, will eventually connect to the Bonneville Bonne-ville Shore Line Trail presently being constructed along the east bench of Utah Valley, and to a trail through Springville City. Grants and community fund raising will be used to finance the trail. The target date to begin the trail is fall of 1997. Although the city and county are supportive of building the trail, it is not on the priority list of projects for the near future without community support. A meeting to discuss all aspects of the trail will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 13 in the Council Room of the Springville Civic Center. Everyone interested in this worthwhile community project is encouraged to come. T-shirts T-shirts with the trail logo will be for sale at the meeting. To raise funds for replacement of deteriorating playground equipment, equip-ment, and under the direction of the School Advisory Council and PTA, students are trying to gather gath-er one million pennies to meet a $10,000 goal. Pennies donated to the school are deposited in one gallon milk containers. School officials said in the first week of the penny drive, students brought in about one gallon's worth of pennies each day. They added it will take about 200 filled containers to reach the goal. The penny drive will continue through the school year, but the school will accept donations in any denomination. An assembly is planned for early May to tally results of the penny drive and display collected pennies. For more information, or to make a donation, contact the school at 489-2850.
