At that time they were living in Harrison County, Iowa with a family of six children. chil-dren. During that time their oldest girl became ill and died and they were forced to leave her on the plains in a little grave. That same winter they left Iowa with a handcart company and started with the pioneers on the long journey westward across the plains. They were on their way to the Salt Lake Valley. James Madison Pierce, husband of Mary Ann had his covered wagon, a team of oxen, a hand cart, five children, his wife, Mary Ann and Mary Ann's pet cow. Bossy, and a few of their earthly belongings. As the company rested at one of the water holes for two or three days, Mary Ann's cow took sick. They did everything they could for her. but when the time came for the company to leave, they had to leave Bossy behind. The family felt very sad about leaving her to what they thought would be Bossy's death. Mary Ann cried as she left her pet cow, but those sad things couldn't could-n't be helped. The company arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in the early Spring of 1854. The families rested, then were assigned to different parts of Deseret. They settled in the southeast pan of the old fort wall. Mary Ann had days when she felt sad and wished she had her pet cow, especially since the milk and butter was greatly missed by the family. It had been about three months since she left Bossy on the desert to die. When the new companies arrived in town, all the people would go to meet them. One morning James was there to meet the newcomers. He noticed one family with a cow that looked a lot like Bossy. He spoke with the people and asked them where they got the cow. They replied, "Why, that's our cow! " James Madison said, "If I can prove she is my wife's cow, will you let us have her?" They thought they were safe and agreed. He went home, and as soon as possible, returned with Mary Ann. She was so happy to see her cow and she put her hand out and said, "Sook. Bossy, sook. " The cow came right to her and put her head on Mary Ann's shoulder. The people said, "The cow is yours." The Australian koala bear is not related to any kind of bear. Wesfside School gets Women's Nestle RIF grant Reading is Fundamental, or RIF, was founded in 1966. The goal of RIF is to encourage children to read by showing them that reading is fun. RIF is a national, non-profit organization that inspires children to read through planned reading-related reading-related activities and by making it possible for youngsters to choose and to own books that interest them without cost to them or their families. The Nestle'-RIF grant has helped Westside School to purchase pur-chase over 900 RIF books to give to their students from pre-school through 5th Grade. The books will be given to students at three different reading activities during the school year. Westside boys and girls received their first RIF book last December during a school read-a-than. Students were thrilled to receive and keep their books. Two other planned RIF activities activi-ties where children will be given books include a Young Author's Week and a fun Dress as Your Favorite Book Character Day. RIF's unique approach makes youngsters want to read, and the more they read, the more their skills improve. Westside teachers and students would like to thank Nestle' for providing the RIF grant and for helping children discover the joy and importance of reading.
