Show Page Ten - The Springville Herald - January 29, 1997 Creating family unify with karate It's hard to find an activity a family can do together that isn't just sitting and watching something. some-thing. Families watch videos, movies, sports and go to church together, but when you look for an activity for a family with an age span of 30 years and a broad range of fitness and interest, your choices narrow quickly. Three families in the Springville Spring-ville area have found such an activity, and it usually causes raised eyebrows when they tell their friends about it. Two or three times a week the Clint Harris, Gene Nielsen and Dave Gardner families workout together togeth-er at a karate studio. They are training in Olympic style Tae-KwonDo Tae-KwonDo at Royal West Martial Arts in Springville. The Gardner's started their training over a year ago. Mar-Lynn Mar-Lynn was looking for a fitness program which wouldn't be boring. Her husband, Dave, and their children, Lori, Lindsay and Daniel, soon joined her because it looked fun. MarLynn and Dave have noticed a real family unity and bonding which has happened as a result of their training together. MarLynn explains, "TaeKwonDo has become a major family conversation con-versation topic. We all really depend on each other to help prepare for rank advancement." Gene and Grace Nielsen, with their children Aaron (22, Emily (16), Steven (14) and Melanie ofTf County Commissioner David Gardner, second from left, and his family, David, MarLynn, Lori and Lindsay, have found togetherness togeth-erness and family fun by learning karate together. The family lives in Springville and go to the Royal West Martial Arts for their workouts. 1 If v i n " 1 1 Gene and Grace Nielsen of Mapleton got involved in karate after looking for something to do together that was fun and healthy. They started their karate workouts six monins ago and put them at the Health notes Fido actually knows a lot about staying healthy. Don't think too much. Drink lots of water. Ideas are a capital that bears interest only in the hands of talent. -Rivarol (12) were looking for something to do together which would provide pro-vide fun and healthy interaction. Not only does karate provide a new exciting family identity, but at workouts the mom and dad aren't "parenting" the kids. Grace has found that often the teenage kids learn faster than the parents which gives the kids a change to help and teach mom and dad. Grace has seen an increased spirit of closeness and cooperation coopera-tion in their family, along with the benefits of fitness. At a special spe-cial awards banquet in December, Grace received recognition as "Most Improved Student." When a football and basketball basket-ball player marries a dancer and they have two active sons, it seems only natural for them to search for a sport to do together as a family. Clint and Laura Harris, with their sons Nathan and Jacob, started taking TaeKwonDo Tae-KwonDo about six months ago and not put their workouts at the top of their priority list. Instead of playing ball in the backyard with the boys, Clint holds kicking targets for them to practice their kicks, strikes and punches. Sparring Spar-ring with dad is even more fun that video games. These three families have adopted the motto of "A family who kicks together sticks together," togeth-er," and answer the raised eyebrows eye-brows with "You need to try it yourselfit's fun!" top of their priority list. ! drtvliw von mm? c i STOW-IT I (801)977-8885 1995 W SPORTS Z-kmM SHS meitliirag rC 11 The Red Devil Wrestlers looked better than the score indicated but they were handily, defeated by probably the best squad (Pleasant Grove) in the ' state.
