Not pictured are Ben Phelan and Town meeting with Legislature Feb. 1 1 Utahans can stay close to home and still see and talk directly direct-ly with state lawmakers on February Feb-ruary 1 1 during the third annual "town meeting" with the Utah Legislature. The question-and-answer session will be broadcast like via satellite from the State Capitol from 6 to 8 p.m. To participate by viewing or phoning in questions, ques-tions, citizens are invited to go to any of the 29 county offices of Utah State University Extension, primary sponsor of the event. Local pre-broadcast civic meetings meet-ings will also be in some county extension offices. . A majority of state legislators are expected to attend the town meeting held in the chamber of the Utah House of Representatives, Representa-tives, including Senator Lane Beattie, president of the Utah Senate, and Rep. Melvin Brown, Speaker of the House. "This kind of direct access to state legislators, just three weeks into their 1997 session, is almost unheard of," said Bob Gilliland, USU Extension Director. "It is a tremendous opportunity for Utah citizens to be heard and have input in the legislative process. " Legislative leaders are expected expect-ed to take a few minutes to welcome wel-come viewers and outline progress prog-ress on some issues facing Utah. Then the floor will be open to Utah citizens to address their own concerns to lawmakers. Such issues as education, state taxes, L highway funding and preparations for the 2002 Winter Olympics are expected to be raised. "The first meetings were very successful in bringing a lot of issues to the attention of the legislature," explained Roger McEvoy of USU Extension, who is scheduled to moderate the town meeting for the third year. In addition to local residents and the media, those especially encouraged to attend include county commissioners, mayors and city counselors, teachers and other school officials, planning and zoning commissions and other local groups. The town meeting is co-sponsored by the leadership of the Utah Legislature, USU Extension, Exten-sion, the Utah Association of Counties, the Utah League of Women Voters, the Utah Association Associ-ation of Conservation Districts, the Utah Congress of Parents and Teachers (PTA) and the Utah State Chamber of Commerce. County Extension offices are listed in local telephone directories directo-ries under Utah State University Extension.
