Show Page Four - The Springville Herald - January 17, 1996 Centennial celebration Early theatres Utah is celebrating 100 years of statehood this year, and during this centennial celebration the Springville Herald will run articles of interest on the history of the state and of the Spring-' Spring-' villeMapleton area. Contributions Contribu-tions to this column are being accepted. The Springville Historical Society submitted the following information about early theaters in Springville. Groesbeck Theatre 1861-1868 Early in the spring of 1861 adobe makers, plasterers, me-. chanics and stone masons were busy in preparations for building the Groesbeck Theater. Thomas Child, the village stone mason, with his workmen, was rushing to complete the rock foundation. The building was situated in the middle of the block on the east side of Main Street between Center and First South Street. The house was about 80 by 50 feet, built of adobes and native lumber with a shingled roof. Its construction presented many difficulties to its owner and manager, man-ager, Nicholas H. Groesbeck. As it was difficult to obtain nails for the building, wooden pegs were often used. The nails that were used were made from scrap iron and steel salvaged from the wreckage wrec-kage of Camp Floyd. How to secure equipment for the playhouses was also a problem. prob-lem. However, this was solved when Johnston's Army was called to abandon Camp Floyd and return to the East to take part in the Civil War. The soldiers had built a theater, the equipment of which was ordered sold to the highest bidder. Groesbeck drove to the camp and purchased the windows, curtains, scenery and costumes for his theater for much less than the real value. When the theater was finished, fin-ished, it was considered the best playhouse outside of Salt Lake City. The main entrance on the west had a large double door opening into the interior of the auditorium, which had a seating capacity of about five hundred. The stage had two dressing rooms and was large enough to make a fine dancing floor with space enough for six sets of cotillion. It was upon this floor that the first waltz was danced in Springville. Although built primarily for a playhouse, the Groesbeck Theater became the center of Spring-ville's Spring-ville's social activities such as dances, banquets and meetings. The theater was destroyed by a blizzard in 1868. Johnson Theater 1882-1889 D. C. Johnson and James E. Hall, built the next theater in Springville in 1882, the best at the time outside of Salt Lake City in all of Utah Territory. It cost $10,000 and could seat 500 people. peo-ple. The stage was large enough to put on any kind of play and ART CITY ChlrWFRACTIC Providing a holistic, drug free approach to better health & recovery from illness Not just temporary relief of pain but specific correction of the problem Better health and less pain during pregnancy. The scenery cost $1,000 and was painted by Henry C. Try on of Chicago. A local troupe, members mem-bers of S. S. Hamil's elocution class, became almost as good as professionals. The more noted members of the Home Dramatic Troupe were Joseph M. Westwood, Aaron Jr. and Moses Johnson, C.W. Houtz, Lyndia Mease Johnson, Luella Matson and Eliza Johnson. Later, Miss Viola Cook, Lulu and Lily Boyer were added. In 1890 the beautiful opera house was burned to the ground much to the sorrow of the general public. In the late Autumn of 1889, the theater hall, that had been the pride and admiration of the people peo-ple for eight years, took fire about 3 o'clock in the morning. The planning mill where the fires started, and the theater connected to the mill, was reduced to ashes. The fire consumed $20,000 worth of property. Those who lost most were Milan Packard, Hugh M. Douglass, Don and Moses Johnson John-son and E. J. Hall. , I Marie Child, daughter of John and Susan Child of Mapleton, has completed her LDS mission in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
