Show Page Six - The Springville Herald - July 20, 1994 I remember . . . By Vernon Tipton For over six decades I have carried a heavy burden of quilt. If ever the Atlantic cod, Gadus Morlusa, is on the endangered species list, I must accept the lion's share of the blame. It is likely that the average annual consumption of cod live oil was double what it would have been had I not been a heavy consumer of cod liver oil. Every morning and every night a tablespoon full of cod liver oil was forced into my mouth and then it coursed smoothly through my blood stream until it reached my vital organs. It is unfortunate that there was no way of measuring my "oil level" as there is in an automobile. automo-bile. Had there been, the "dip stick" would have indicated "enough" or "full to capacity." According to the World Book Encyclopedia (1991 edition, you can see it for yourself on page 748), "Cod liver oil is a yellow, fishy smelling oil obtained from the livers of codfish. " Obviously the writers of the World Book Encyclopedia were unfamiliar with cod liver oil. There are at least ten modifying adjectives that could have been added to that description and only then would my childhood ordeal been portrayed por-trayed with some degree of accuracy. accu-racy. The World Book Encyclopedia Encyclope-dia offers this description of the codfish. "The Atlantic cod has three dorsal and two anal fins, the upper jaw projects beyond the lower... the lateral line is pale, Emily Ann Harder, daughter of Boyd and Jayne Harder of Springville, has been selected as a finalist in the 1994 Pre-Teen Utah Recognition Program to be held in Salt Lake. ' The only person ever recorded ; as having been hit by a meteorite ! was Mrs. : Ann Hodges of Alabama in 1954. She was slightly bruised. Calvin Coolidge etc, etc. the scientific description of the codfish is insignificant. It is the liver that should be the focus of attention. The average aver-age size of the cod varies from two and a half to twenty five pounds and I daresay that 90 of the weight is liver. Otherwise, how would it have been possible for me to consume so much cod liver oil? I have never, nor will I ever suffer form rickets. And were it possible for my posterity to benefit bene-fit from the cod liver oil forced upon me, they would be free of rickets even unto the fourth and fifth generations. Actually, cod liver oil does contain vitamins A and D. But if cod liver oil were as effective as claimed in those advertisements, why was I quarantined quar-antined so many times with all of those childhood diseases? Incidentally, another advertisement advertise-ment asked, "Are you nervous, do you become irritated at trifles?" tri-fles?" Of course I was nervous, every time I saw my mother coming with that brown bottle and that enormous tablespoon. Certainly I was irritated but I can assure you could liver oil was no trifle. Then the advertisement continued, contin-ued, "Dr. Miles" Nervine will help you." It didn't help me. Even now when I see a brown bottle my suspicious are aroused and my nervous symptoms reappear. reap-pear. I must confess that I thought of the possibility of a substitute. I eliminated castor oil immediately; it was twenty five cents a bottle. Doane's Pills for back ache were considered because pills would have been easier to Jake, but it wasn't my back that troubled me. Indian Root Pills offered some possibilities - "they drive out the body poisons." But I wanted to prevent them from getting in. I envied other kids whose mothers paid attention to this advertisement - "Don't struggle trying to get your children to take bitter, evil tasting laxatives. Get a package of Dr. Miles' Laxative Tablets and the children will beg for them - they taste so good." If the choice had been mine I would have taken Ayer's Sarsaparilla or Hel's Honey of Horehound Drops (The Great Cough Remedy) rather than Scott's Emulsion of Cod Liver Oil. ' . Now it is widely known that a normal diet contains sufficient quantities of vitamins A and D to satisfy physical needs of the body. I was born sixty years to early. However, cod liver oil was needed for the proper development develop-ment of my attitude toward life. Sometimes the greatest lessons in life are the hardest to swallow And then too, I did my share to shore up the national economy, especially the fishing industry. Still, my apologies to the Atlantic cod, Gadus Morlusa. Consider The livestock market of the 90's The demand for emus is far greater than the current supply in the existing breeders market. The value placed upon emu leadicr, feathers, and essential oils alone make these birds a high-profit livestock investment. The low-fat red meat is a nutritionist dream in todays health conscious society. Emu ranching is well known internationally, but just getting established in America. This choice opportunity requires approximately two acres of land or more to breed, raise and sell chicks and mature emus. Profits are superb in die industry with the right support and help. Income per acre far exceeds any other livestock operation.
