Show Page Four - The Springville Herald - January 5, 1994 Church plans historic Plans to restore the building which housed the shop where the first edition of the Book of Mormon: Mor-mon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ was printed in 1830 were announced today by the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Situated on Main Street in the western New York village of Palmyra, the historic Grandin Building, when restored, will allow visitors to see a fully outfitted outfit-ted press room and bindery of the early 19th Century. The Book of Mormon is a religious and secular history of early civilizations of the western hemisphere, primarily between 600 B.C. and the fifth century. It comes form ancient records translated by Joseph Smith, first president of the Church. Because it includes the brief ministry of the Savior in what is now the Americas, it is subtitled "Another Testament of Jesus Christ" and is viewed by Latter-day Saints as a scriptural companion to the Holy Bible. The Grandin Building is part of the Palmyra Historic District and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was purchased by the Church in 1978. A press room and bindery will be on the upper floors of the building and a new interpretive exhibit on the translation and publication of the book will replace an existing temporary exhibit on the street floor, officials offi-cials said. The building will be closed in early 1994 and the restoration project should be reopened to visitors during 1995. "Restoration of the Grandin Building will offer visitors an experience with the Book of Mormon that will focus on its importance to the Church," said Elder Stephen D. Nadauld, a member of the Church's Second quorum of the Seventy and executive exec-utive director of the Church Historical Department. "In this historic building, the story of the coming forth of the Book of Mormon will be brought to life in its authentic historic setting," he added. " "From this location," Elder Nadauld said, "a small group of early Church members launched the effort to fill the world with the message of the Book of Mormon Mor-mon as another witness of Jesus Christ." The first printing of the book was for 5,000 copies. Since 1830, it has been translated into 82 languages and nearly 60 million mil-lion copies have been distributed worldwide over the years. Visitors to the remodeled main floor will see a mockup of E.B. Grandin' s bookstore, where the first copies of the Book of Mormon Mor-mon were made available for sale on March 26, 1830. Exhibits on that floor will include a model of the Palmyra area, artistic depictions depic-tions of Joseph Smith's religious experiences in the area and information infor-mation ont he translation of the Book of Mormon and preparation prepara-tion of the manuscript for printing. print-ing. The original press on which the book was printed is now on exhibit at the Museum of Church Senior citizens Springville and Mapleton Senior Citizens are happy to be back at the senior center meeting with their friends and making new ones as they enjoy the activities activi-ties there.
