Morgan Schouten, son of Ron and Doreene Schouten of Springville, has received the Army commendation Medal for meritorious service. Sgt. Schouten has been stationed at McChord AFB, WA and assigned to a detachment at Ft. Lewis as a finance specialist. During his time at Ft. Lewis, Sgt. Schouten created a computer program to automate the accounting system of the Installation Detention Facility saving the military 13 of a million dollars in operational and developmental costs. For this contribution and. exceptional service Sgt. Schouten received the rare interservice medal. Sgt. Schouten has also been involved in community volunteer work as a cub-Scoutmaster, volunteer swimming coach, and Little League coach. He and his wife, Amy, have four children. Participating students and ensembles had previously qualified by receiving Superior ratings in Region VIII music festivals and being selected above other Superior ratings because of the quality of their performance. Those participating students and state ratings received were: Alison Minor, Superior-; Kevin Bachelder, Superior; Mark Tobler, Superior; Nathan Balser, Superior; Karl Orme, Excellent ; Jess Johnson, Ex cellent; Krissy Rey, Excellent ; Chamber Choir, Superior -j Ladies "6", Superior; and Trumpet Trio, Superior. The A Cappella Choir received Superior ratings this past week in the Region Choral Festival and the Concert Band received Superior ratings in their Region Festival April 1 1 , 1990 and represented SHS at the State Festival in Taylors-ville Taylors-ville on May 5. The SHS Showcase program on May 9th, tonight, will be the next public performances of many of the music groups including Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, Hi's, Orchestra and Jazz Band. Woodworking project will -be shown at Spring Showcase The Millwork and Cabinetry Department at Springville High School, under the supervision of Fenton W. Billings, will have 1 00 entries in their Spring Showcase. The students have built waterbeds, beds,- night-stands, night-stands, bookcases, stereo cabinets, cabi-nets, tripple and double dressers, dres-sers, doll cabinets, chests of drawers, tables, desk and entertainment centers which will be on display in the Main Gym from 7 to 9 p.m. A door prize of a nightstand that has been built by the students stu-dents in the advanced class will be given away at the end of the evening. Students attending the. Southern Utah State College Industrial Arts Show on April 30 and May 1st won the Golden Gol-den Harmcr Award for participation partici-pation from a high school. This is the first time Springville High School has won this outstanding out-standing award. The following students received individual awards at the Southern Utah State College Industrial Arts Show and display April 30 and May 1. CA, the daughlcrof Clarence and Alia Mae Warner Shepherd. She married George Fakler and was later divorced. She married mar-ried Douglas Paulson and was later divorced. She married Richard Van Zomeren on October II, 1973 in I.as Vegas. NV and the marriage was solemnized in 1976 at the Salt Lake City I.DS Temple. She is survived by her husband. Orem. View Hospital in I'ayson or heart failure. He was born April 3. 1914 in Fairview. to William H. and Pernellie C. Nielson Garlick. He married Shirley Brown on October 10, 1947 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He grew up in Utah attending schools in Fairview and Price, and fraduated from Utah tate University. A veteran of WWII, he served with the Army in Europe. He worked in Washington D.C. for the Census Bureau and spent much of his career as a Soil Scientist in Washington and Nevada where he retired after 30 years of service. He later worked for Signetics Corp. in Orem. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed en-joyed gardening and tending the yard. He was an avid BYU sports fan. He was an active member of the LDS Church and served as bishop's counselor. High , Councilman, bishop and 1 in many other ward and stake callings in Fallon. Nevada and Springville. Planting beans in sandy tracts will enable other plants to thrive there as well. J. Riley Morton J. Riley Norton, 89, died Thursday. May 3, 1990 at a Provo care center of natural causes. He was born in Panguitch, July 27. 1900 to John Riley and Mary Hannah Cameron Norton. Nor-ton. He married Lois Loretta Lewis, they were later divorced. He married mar-ried Romola Bunker, they were sealed in the Manti LDS Temple. She died in November of 1953. At this time, he married Ruby B. Twitchell, a sister of Romola. Ruby died May 19. 1989. Riley worked for the railroad and an electrical ' J. Riley Norton company before he moved to Springville. He was a produce trucker for many years and also took care of the Provo Tabernacle for some time. He was active in the LDS Church serving in many Priesthood call-ings, call-ings, including a counselor in a bishopric. With his third wife. Ruby, he filled two missions mis-sions for the church, one to the Southwest Indian Mission, and the other to Pecos. Texas in the Texas Dallas Mission. He was also very active in temple work. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He is survived by five children and three stepchildren: step-children: Guy L. Norton. Springville: Mrs. Burton (Donna) Harmer. He was born January 20. 1958 in Spanish Fork, the son of John and Pauline Levitt Reid. He married Annette Olsen in 1978. They were later divorced. di-vorced. He was engaged to marry Terrie Larscn of Ephraim. He attended schools in Spanish Fork and Provo. He was a member of the LDS Church. He had been a roofer for 13 years. He was born April 10. 1921 in Waukegian. Illinois to Jesse Root and Adah Elora Okey Gathercoal. He married Gcraldine Joy Petersen July 13. 1941 in Las Vegas. The marriage was later solemnized in the Mesa. LDS Temple. He had been a nurseryman for 20 years, and for the past 15 years, was a professional genealogist, lie enjoyed raising Guinea pigs, camping, fishing and square dancing. lie was a member of the LDS Church; and was a High 'Priest. He had served tw stake missions and had served as Elders Quorum President. High Priest group leader, and was over the ward, genealogical gene-alogical program. He was also director of the stake genealogical library. He had lived in Springville for the past 20 years. She was born March 4. 1900 in Springville to Israel Easthan and Verona Amelia Noakcs Clegg. She married Laccll Bird in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on September 25. 1918. He died June 10, 1973. She was raised and attended schools in Springville graduating from Springville High School. She moved to Bountifui eight y:ars ago. She served in many positions in the Church, including Relief Society. Primary. Sunday School and many other positions at the ward and stake levels. She was an accomplished pianist and accompanied many of the local singers. She was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and was also an excellent seamstress and cook.
