All winter long the owners of , the various cars have been putting them back in shape, getting ready for the new season. Now, after the first race, many of the cars have dents, scrapes, scars and bends which mark the begining of a long series of "ouches." Gene Edwards, the new "Grizzly Adams" was on hand to promote a video called "The New Adventures of Grizzly Adams." Edwards also kicked off his racing career by entering enter-ing the competition in the car driven by Doyle Olsen last year. Doyle will continue to drive when the bear man is not at Suntana, but other times will serve as advisor and part of the large crew that accompanies the Pepperdyne race team from Heber, Utah that sponsors Edwards. Ed-wards. Also at the track on Saturday Satur-day was Red West, of "Black Sheep Squadron" fame. Kevin Wright of Rock Springs, Wyoming, came to the race with a brand new car but lady luck was not on his side. He was involved in an accident where another car got up underneath un-derneath him and destroyed his fuel system. Sorry Kevin, hope that won't discourage you from returning to Suntana, Utah's largest Oval track. . ' i TIP f WJ Jenni Johnston, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry ( Vicki Voorhees) Johnston of South Jordan, and granddaughter of Lyn and Pauline Voorhees of Springville, won the heptathlon heptath-lon at the BYU Invitational Track Meet last week. A junior at Bingham High School, Jenni also plays soccer and basketball,' is an honor student with a 3.99 GPA, in the National Honor Society, and; has played violin in the school orchestra for five years. She as run 45.9 in the 300 meter hurdles, 12:49.0 in the 110 meters, 15.2 in the 100 hurdles sailed 17'-912" in the long jump. Photo by Charles Lowery. leiies brush past Cedar City by Jessica Black The Lady Red Devil's Softball Soft-ball Team edged the Cedar City Redmen 15-14 Friday at Upper Kolob. Kim Bird hit a three-run homerun in the second to give the Devils a seven-run inning. Seven runs were scored by both teams in the innings that followed. In the fifth, Cedar took advantage of some "devilish" "devil-ish" errors to take the lead over the Lady Devils by three points. In the bottom of the last regulation inning, Michelle Kirby, Kim Bird and Suzy Shellene loaded up the bases from walks. Tara Houtz and Cynthia Child each hit the ball deep to centerfield and sacrificed sacri-ficed home two runs with Kirby Kir-by and Bird scoring. The tieing run scored .when Shelline scored on an infield hit by Cretia Davis. In the top of the seventh, Mary Ellen Stover went to the mound and. pitched a scoreless inning. When the Devil's came to bat, Stover led off with a beautifully placed bunt in front of home plate. In a mad dash to first, she beat the throw and went on to second base. Stover then stole third as the pitcher walked from the mound. Cedar's catcher made a wild throw that allowed her to dash home with the winning run. The Devils play Spanish Fork at home on the 8th and Dixie on Thursday in St. George. Men's Golf Assoc. starts activities The Hobble Creek Men's Golf Association will kick off its regular season of events this week with the first men's night and the first champ-of-the-month. Thursday at 4:30 p.m. will be the starting time for the first men's night. The format will be a two-man criss-cross. Mens' nights will be held every Thursday. , Saturday will be the May Champ-of-the-Month. Competition Com-petition will be held in both the net and gross division. Tee times are available in the afternoon and in the morning. Those interested in playing should contact the Pro Shop at 489-6297. June 1 is the deadline for joining the Men's Association. A full season of events is scheduled and anyone interested in more information about the association should contact President Jay Lamb or tournament Chairman Gorth Evans. Qodoo c00Gn contest set The Hobble Creek Riding Club will be sponsoring the Little Buckaroo Rodeo once again this year. The rodeo will be held on Saturday, June 9 at the Springville Rodeo Grounds. The club will be holding tryouts for the Miss Springville Rodeo Queen on May 16 at 7 p.m. Contestants will be judged on their horsemanship horse-manship skills and style. All young ladies under 14 years of age are invited to participate. ESobbls Cf!( Eliding Club toliGG honors The Hobble Creek Riding Club was recently awarded the trophy for the High Point club in District Five of the Utah Riding Club Association. The .Springville club has taken this honor for the past several years and has consistently been one of the outstanding clubs in the state. The riding club has made some recent changes which will make the club and its activities open to single women over the age of 1 8. Anyone interested in joining the club and improving their horsemanship abilities is . welcome to join them at their f ride nights at the Springville Rodeo Grounds on Tuesday, and Thursday at 7 p.m. In addition to riding at the arena, the club will be enjoying enjoy-ing some trail rides, dinner meetings and socials. Each student completed a project to display. Some of these projects were castles, weapons, poetry, coat of arms, and stories. During the fair they had tournament games consisting of wrestling matches, sword fights, and archery contests.
