The average savings when generic drugs are substituted; for name brand products is about 35 percent, but it can be as high as 80; percent for some drugs. None of us wants to take chances with our health by using "cut rate", medicine. Generics, though, are not cut rate in the traditional sense. They are not "irregular," "slightly blemished" or "out-dated." Rather, they are a result of the natural evolution of drugs. The Utah Generic Drug Substitution Act rVquires that you specifically request substitution. She says this does not mean that you have to know the generic name. It just means' that you have to make the request known to either your doctor or( pharmacist. Although pome pharmacists may volunteer Information about a generic equivalent, they are not required to. Simply ask "Is there a generic Substitute for this drug?" " Ackerman says Utah law does not guarantee that the generic equivalent'drug will always be less expensive than the brand name. .However, it is unlikely that phaf-inacists phaf-inacists would make ajndre costly substitution and remain competitive with other pharmacies.
