Show SOCIAL NEWS Golden wedding told The children of Al G. and Bernice L. Rigtrup will honor their parents on their Golden Wedding Anniversary with an open house, Saturday, February 23, 1985 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lake Shore Ward Church. The event is open to all friends and relatives. They request no gifts just your friendship. The couple were married February 25, 1935 in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Salt Lake Temple. They have lived all of their married lives in Lake Shore operating the Rigtrup Hatchery and Lake Shore Egg Farm. They have five children: Mrs. (Bud) Elaine Shepherd, Lake Shore; Mrs. Farrell (Deanna) Wankier, Salt Lake; Mrs. Leon (Alene) Zeeman, Mrs. Mark (Jean) Peterson, and Jim A. Rigtrup all of Lake Shore. They have 26 grandchildren grand-children and 6 great-grandchildren. Florence Phillips Ninetieth birthday celebration Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Bill Phillips are hosting an open house to honor his mother, Florence Simkins Phillips, on her ninetieth birthday. It will be held Sunday, February 24, 1985 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Sanford's Catering. 80 West Center, Springville. Mrs. Phillips was born February 26, 1895 at Adamsville, Utah to James Charles and Emily Jane Gunn Simkins, the seventh of 10 children. The family moved to Springville in 1903. Mrs. PhHlips attended school in Springville and at the BYU Academy. She taught school in Wanship, Hoytsville and Mapleton. She was principal of the Jefferson School in Springville before she was married. She married William J. Phillips August 19, 1924. They made their home in Springville where he and his brother operated Phillips garage. Mr. Phillips died in August 1966. Mrs. Phillips was on the Relief Society Stake Board and the M I A. Stake Board. She also taught Sunday school for 39 years. Mrs. Phillips has one son, Melvin Bill, Springville, one grandson, J. Jefferie Phillips with the U.S. Air Force in Madrid, Spain, two granddaughters, grand-daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Lizabeth) Braun, Salt Lake City, Mrs. Val C. (Allison) Parrish, Kearns and 3 great granddaughters, Amberlie, Michelle and Natalie Phillips residing with their parents in Madrid, Spain. All friends are cordially invited to attend. Al and Bernice Rigtrup Ladies Literary Club Members of the Ladies Literary Club enjoyed a special afternoon Tuesday February 12, at the home of Birdella Bearson. They were served a delicious lunch, carrying out valentine colors, by the hostesses Birdella Bearnson and Una Bryan. Following the lunch Marie Whiting showed slides of old homes and buildings in Springville dating back in the late eighteen hundreds and the early nineteen hundreds. Some of the structures have been restored and are very beautiful, others ap pear almost as they looked when they were originally built. It was found that seven members of the club were either born, have lived or are now living in many of these homes. Members of the club present were; Una Bryan, Birdella Bearnson, Bearn-son, Clara Sumsion, Helen Crandall, Minnie Grosebeck, Manilla Brown, Bertha Johnson, Jessie Dalton, May Grosebeck, Rowena Rigtrup and our special guest, Marie Whiting. Children sing of America The biennial Parade of American Music of the Springville Federated Music Club will be presented Monday, February 25, 1985, at 7:00 P.M. in the Springville High School Auditorium. This year's program will be given entirely by the Sage Creek Elementary School. Since February is usually a good month to renew our pride and patriotism in our beloved country, this special evening will be a good opportunity for families to come and participate together in this program. Every family and anyone interested in-terested are invited to come and enjoy what the teachers and children of Sage Creek have worked so hard to prepare. Utah Mothers' Convention The Salt Lake Hilton, will be the setting of the 1985 Utah Mothers Convention on February 23rd. The convention theme will be "The Art of Mothering". Her grandparents are Maryn Johnson, Keith and Marva Davis and great-grandparents. Carrel and Iva Watters, all of Springville. Spr-ingville. Jennifer has three sisters and one brother. 9 ? Home Culture Club meets The Home Culture Club was held Friday, February 15th at the home of Mrs. Bert Brown. Mrs. Jane Strong was co-hostess. President, Mrs. Howard Sumsion, conducted. The Club Collect was read by Gladys Judd and the Pledge to the Flag was led by Deon Peery. A lovely luncheon lun-cheon was served to 17 members. A most interesting program was presented by Mrs. Harold Whiting who showed slides of the Historical Homes of Springville. Camp Aaron Johnson The February meeting of Camp Aaron Johnson was held at the home of Grace Crandall. Mrs. Crandall conducted and announced that the election of officers of the East South Utah County will be held this year and the county convention will be April 27, in Springville. A history of Harriette Billington Bates was read by her granddaughter, grand-daughter, Ida Van Leuwen. Harriette was bom November 27, 1831 in Audlem Cheshire England. When the gospel was introduced to the family they accepted it and left for America in 1842 landing in New Orleans. In the fall of 1847 they left Nauvoo in the second company of pioneers. Harriette married Joseph William Bates in 1857 and moved to Payson. One of the highlights of her life was attending the dedication of the Salt Lake Temple. She died May 15, 1909 in Payson. The lesson on Pioneer Vocations was given by class leader, Helen Harmer. As soon as they entered the valley, the pioneers had immediate needs to be met in order to assure their survival. First they needed shelter and then food and it became the vocation of each one to do assigned tasks that would help with their existance. Crop production, raising livestock and building homes were among the first vocations. Luncheon was served to 16 members and one guest. Delphia Brown and Grace Crandall were hostesses. Parents of gifted kids On Tuesday, February 26, the meeting of the Organization of Parents of Gifted Children will be held at the Parent Resource Center. The meeting will go from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at 175 South Main Street. The regular meeting date is the 4th Tuesday of each month where speakers and discussion groups are featured. Auxiliary sweetheart party The Springville Firemen's Auxiliary was treated to their annual an-nual Sweethearts' party recently by their fireman husbands. Dinner was served in the new multipurpose room of the Public Service Building and entertainment was provided by the Ethington children, accompanied ac-companied by Bonnie Wickes. New officers were chosen to lead the Auxiliary for the coming year and a half. Those elected are Beth Johnson, president; Venita Roylance, 1st vice president; Launa Stewart, 2nd vice president and Jean Fox, secretary-treasurer. These officers will be charged with the extra responsibility of planning for the State Firemen's Convention which will be held in Springville in June 1986, so their term is extended. Outgoing officers, Shirley Smith, president; Chris Johnson, vice president and Janet Cope, secretary-treasurer, were honored for their many hours devoted to leading the group in several civic projects. They also directed the women in successful involvement at the 1984 convention in St. George where the auxiliary brought home trophies and had one of their members, Helen Whitney, elected as a state officer. He is outnumbered by , females but doesn't seem to care. His mother, Michelle Day of Salt Lake is holding him. Mrs. Cox and the mother are wearing white gowns because baby Joshua was taken out of the incubator so they could hold him. He is fine now and at home with his parents. Pari Passu Sweetheart Party The Pari Passu Club met last Wednesday at the Social Center in Spanish Fork for the annual Sweetheart party. Mrs. Max Sumsion and Mrs. Carol Gardner were co-hostesses. Betty Sumsion took charge and welcomed all who were there. Darol Gardner gave the prayer and blessing on the food. Valentine poetry was given by Lee and Helen Stirland. After a delicious meal Naomi Gardner introduced the Markgraf family who gave a delightful program of music, singing and dancing and stories of "Tunes from the Shows of Hollywood." Those present were; Bert and Marva Taylor, Willard and Anna Ostlund, Ralph and Erma Peay, Lee' and Helen Stirland, Darol and Naomi Gardner, LaRell and Yvonne Johnson, Frank and Louise Springer, Evelyn Wolsey, Maryn Johnson, Erma Bird, Lorene Savage, Carl and Renee Curtis, Kent and Anna Marie Palfreyman and Max and Betty Sumsion.
