Ten recipients were selected from the state of Utah to receive this award. It will be presented May 2 at the Pioneer Trail Memorial Park Social H ALL. Lanae was also a finalist in the state Sterling Scholar competition in speech and drama. She is the editor of the high school yearbook this year. The curtains of this school year are drawing to a close. Center stage these days is occupied by our latest students of the month of April. For the 8th grade we have Valerie Mangum, Kristi Mendenhall, Mike Swendsen and Dave Condie. Ninth graders are Alison Jensen, Dayna Whiting, Eric Beveridge and Brett Sanford. Valerie Mangum: I'm the daughter of Gene and Carma Mangum. I have 3 brothers and 2 sisters. I have lived in many places in Utah and Colorado. I play the piano, sew and paint ceramics. During Dur-ing the summer, you can usually find me jumping on the trampoline. 1 also like to play badminton and go on vacations with my family. 1 plan to go to college and become an interior in-terior decorator. Kristi Mendenhall: I am 14 years old. I was born in Utah Valley Hospital and lived in Orem at the time. 1 moved to Springville at the age of three. My favorite sports are snow skiing, waterskiing, gymnastics, gym-nastics, tennis and Softball. My very favorite is dancing. I want to be a beautician, actress, lawyer or a dancer. My parents are Marda and Kay Mendenhall. Mike Swendsen: I am the son of Doug and Karin Swendsen. I like snow skiing and golfing. I also like to go on family vacations and summer campouts. I would like to be a lawyer or a successful business man somedav. Dave Condie: My parens are Dr. and Mrs. Rulon Condie. Hobbies of mine range from baseball, football, wrestling, swimming and basketball to parties, dancing and girls! After graduating from high school, I hope to pursue a career in , medicine, specializing in plastic surgery. Dayna Whiting: My parents are Mr. & Mrs. James Whiting of Springville. Spr-ingville. I like all sports but my favorite ones are football, Softball, running and tennis. I play the flute and I like to sew and cook. Alison Jensen: I live in Springville and my parents are Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Jensen. My favorite sports are basketball and Softball. I play on the city softball team. I go to Springville Spr-ingville Jr. High and like it very much there. My future goals are to go to college and get a degree in medicine. I would like to become a pediatrician and set up my own practice in Springville. Eric Beveridge: My favorite school subject is shop. I made the honor roll the second term this year. My hobbies include hunting, fishing, camping and backpacking. I also shoot in the Springville-Mapleton Junior Rifle Club. I enjoy football and bicycling. When I am out of high school, I would like to attend the University of Utah. My parents are Mr. and Mrs. Jim Beveridge. Brett Sanford: Vm the son of Ray and Jannette Sanford. I have 3 brothers and 3 sisters. I play the clarinet in the band and am 1st chair. I also play the piano. Some of my hobbies and favorite activies are playing tennis, golf, badminton, football and basketball. I also enjoy cooking, reading, school and doing things with my family. Part of the reason why I like school is because I have good teachers and friends. I have a 3.9 gpa. I plan on attending BYU after high school as I want to be an accountant. Dave Condie and Valerie National Honor Society yets new members ' y ;',: -Mfv J jj Ninth grade citizens for the month of April at the Spr- Sanford, Dayna Whiting and Alison Jensen, ingville Junior High School are Eric Beveridge, Brett The United States Achievement Academy announced today that Stacy Strong has been named a 1984 United States National Award winner in History & Government and Home Economics. Stacy, who attends Springville High School, was nominated for this National Award by Glenn Bird, Social Sciences teacher and Carol Manwaring, Home Economics teacher. Stacy Strong is the daughter of Don and Sydna Strong. The grandparents are Verl and Pat Whiting and Bert and Harriett Strong all of Springville. On Tuesday, April 17, 47 new members were initiated into the Springville High School chapter of the National Honor Society. Students do not apply for this honor ; they are nominated by a faculty committee. The nominees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.75 to be nominated, and after their initiation, they must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.7 to remain members of this society. Because the1 National Honor Society is designed to recognize not only scholarship but also leadership, service, and exemplary character, the nominees must also have shown good accomplishments ac-complishments in these areas. Congratulations to these fine members of Springville High School's National Honor Society. Miss Darlene Amott, one of the school counselors, is the faculty advisor for this group. Each year at the formal initiation, the National Honor Society has the option of giving an honorary membership. This year's recipient of this prestigous award was Mr. Glenn Bird of the SHS faculty. Mr. Bird teaches AP History, American Problems, and European History. Along with Mrs. Pat Kaufman, he also conducts a quarterly Honors Seminar for some of the top students in the school. Not only is Mr. Bird a scholar and an excellent teacher and leader, he is also the coach of both the Boys' and Girls' Tennis Teams which have both won the Region title this year. Mr. Bird also gives service ser-vice to the community and his church. Volunteers needed United Way's Voluntary Action Center and Information and Referral Service need people who can provide clerical services and answer telephones during time of emergency. Individuals who would like to volunteer should call United Way's Voluntary Action Center, 374-8108. Cindy Smith of Springville, recently received her Associate Degree in Nursing during ceremonies at Ricks College. This two-year program also included a four week course in psychiatric nursing. Kaylene Cluff of Springville is a 1984 graduate of the Rick's College nursing program. She received her associate degree along with 56 others.
