The SHS Band held an awards banquet Saturday evening even-ing for band members and their parents. Several members of the band were honored for what they had done in the band last year. Mr. Brian Tobler (Doc) gave out the awards and thanked these students for their efforts. Those receiving trophies were: Christi Conover, Outstanding Junior Band Student, Mike Reese, Director's Award, Paul Lemon, Bandsman of the Year, Mike Douglas, Outstanding Sophomore Band Student, Kathleen Haran, Tall flag of the year Genealogy and faxes topic of UGA meeting The Utah Valley Chapter of the Utah Genealogical Association will meet Thursday, May 3, 1984, at 7:30 p.m., in Room 6225, Lee Library, BYU Campus, Provo. Bonnie Holm will present the topic "Genealogy and Taxes". Mrs. Holm, Spanish Fork mother of 5, enjoys people, genealogy, and taxes. She has been a tax preparer for H & R Block for 18 years. Among other things, she will give ideas on becoming a non-profit family organization so that contributions may be tax deductible. All interested persons are invited to attend. John Franklin Nielsen, age 15, son of Franklin and Marilyn Nielsen of Mapleton, received his Eagle Scout Award in a court of honor Sunday. Don Korth and Brodie Jones presided over the ceremonies. John has served as a senior patrol leader and Deacon's Quorum president. He attended a week long Timberline Camp in 1982. He was the Blazer of the Year in 1981 and Scout of the Year in Troop 3066 in 1982. Scouting leaders include Joan Marrott, Gene Cook, David Nemelka, Richard Nixon and Dennis Wads worth. John has received the Arrow of Light award, the Faith in God, and On My Honor awards. For his Eagle project he organized several scouts and dug the fire hydrants out of the snow and tied markers on them throughout Mapleton. The first television commercial appeared on July 1, 1941. The program will appeal to all levels of interest and scholarship, according to Dr. David J. Whittaker, assistant librarian at BYU and local arrangements chairman for the association. "Anyone who is interested in-terested in the Mormon experience is invited to attend," he said. More than 70 papers on all aspects of Mormon history and culture will be presented at the conference. "There will also be a discussion of the decision by the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to ordain women to the priesthood," Whittaker said. Dr. Edwin S. Gaustad, from the University of California at Riverside and a well-known historian of American religious history, will give the association's annual Tanner Lecture on Saturday, May 12, at 10 a.m., in the de Jong Concert Hall. He will speak on "Historical Theology and Theological History: Mormon Possibilities." Other key addresses will be given by Dr. Kenneth W. Godfrey, president of the association, and Dr. Jan Shipps of Indiana University.
