Almost everyone by now has heard that Justin Shurtleff, Springville High's seven foot center, is going to Colorado State University on an Athletic Scholarship. Few however, may know the reasons why. Shurtleff said that his parents and Lady Devils win fournmnf The Lady Springville Devil basketball team won the Pleasant Grove tournament they were invited to last week by beating American Fork 55-48 and Pleasant Grove 47-28. The tournament was the first of it's kind and was held on Monday and Tuesday Dec. 19 and 20 in Pleasant Grove. The four team tournament was attended by Pleasant Grove, American Fork, Lehi, and Springville. The winners of Mondays games played each other on Tuesday. The losers of Monday played each other on Tuesday also. American Fork The American Fork game started out a little slow for the lady Devils as they were being pressed by the opposition. Coach Andrus said the press caused a lot of turn overs which really hurt them. They were behind at the end of the first half by three. The second half was a different story however, as the Lady Devils started hitting the hoop. They were ahead by seven by the end of the third quarter and were ahead by 7 at the buzzer. High Point honors went to Camille Larsen who had 17 points and 17 rebounds for the night. Linda Burt did well as she scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds. Pleasant Grove The Lady Devils started out slow with the Pleasant Grove team, but were able to keep the lead throughout the whole game. Linda Burt was high scorer for the game with 19 points. Angie Peay had 10 points. High rebounder for the game was Camille Larsen with 11 rebounds. Coach Andrus said the team is really going to do well this year. She said that they lost only one player and should be able to defend their region title. She said the team they need to beat is Spanish Fork. She said that the ones that own the boards that night will win the game. The Lady Devils will play next on Dec. 29 at Wasatch and January 5, which will be the official season opener, against Payson at home. Shurtleff said the thinoe tw f fected his decision most were the coach and team, the schools curriculum, and his parents. Shurtleff said that he was really impressed with Colorado State University, it's coaches, and players. He said he liked the relaxed atmosphere of the school, as well as the dedication of the coaches and players of the basketball team towards learning. Most of the schools that were interested in him did not have the total curriculum he needed for the Fishery and Wildlife Biology major he desires. He said that if Colorado State wouldn't have been interested in him, he would have probably gone to Montana State as they have a program similar to that of Colorado State.
