Mirabeau "Year of the Handicapped" introduced to students at Art City Elementary School Need help with heating bill? By Effie Smart Students at Art City School were introduced to the "Year of the Handicapped" Han-dicapped" on Wednesday afternoon at the regular flag ceremony. Each week the school emphasizes patriotism, national and community awareness, and other events which affect the lives of the students. Culminating a week of special films depicting the lifestyles and problems of the handicapped han-dicapped person, a program was presented featuring the handicapped. han-dicapped. The special handicapped han-dicapped seminary of Provo brought a program to the school, under the direction of Principal Fred Oliver and teacher Dave Ridges. The students sang many hymns including, "Child, You Are a Special Child of God." One student of the seminary, Jerry Lynn Morley, is a teacher's aide for Art City's kindergarten. kin-dergarten. Rick Dotson, a wheelchair occupant, told the students some of the problems handicapped people face, such as stairs, narrow doors, and high drinking fountains. Mr. Dotson, along with Kurt Brinkman, recently won a coveted service award from the Utah State Office of the Handicapped Han-dicapped for promoting the international Year of the Handicapped. His father Richard Dotson is the principal of Art City School. Mayor Wendell Johnson of Mapleton spoke briefly and displayed some of his art work. Mayor Johnson was injured in a diving accident as a teenager. He is paralyzed except for very limited use of his arms. He is a prize winning oil painter. He told the students that handicapped people are often regarded as ugly ducklings. Like the ugly duckling, their lives can become beautiful as they magnify their strengths, develop their talents, and succeed. Mayor Johnson's John-son's mother, Mrs. Orpha Dee Johnson, is secretary at Art City School. Scott Lee, fifth grade teacher, composed a song in honor of the handicapped. han-dicapped. He developed a filmstrip to go along with the message. After showing the filmstrip, Mr. Lee and his class sang the song. The words summarized the theme of the assembly: it's not what's outside, but what's inside that counts. Local piano students to be honored Saturday The piano students of Shauna M.
